Ask Steve a question. / Hand Held Fret saw for scrolling
« on: December 01, 2012, 03:01:54 pm »
Hi Steve,
I am looking into buying a hand held fret saw for some scroll type work.

I was curious if you hand any experience with them.  mainly the blade tensioning.

Its difficult to see online if I can adjust the blade or not and obviously I will need to.

Thanks.

To see if it worthwhile, i first run these sites past alexa and see their stats.  of course if its a site like ebay their stats are through the roof.

Here is the report from craftshowcase.net.

seems to be a new site with very little traffic.

My area is bargain city when it comes to yard sales so i need to do them a bit different.

I noticed the guy across the street sells these framed pictures of scarface and eagles and all sorts of ugly things that i would never buy but he will put out a few items and people will be lining up to buy them.

So i have a big sheet of plywood that i put some items out on when I work in the garage.  people walk by or stop to get a better look.

I can charge more this way then just lumping them in with all the yard sale jusnk people expect to get for $1.

A guy across the street was throwing out an old electrics test stand so i brought it home and put my saw on it.  Works great, has a power outlet right on it plus a couple drawers and a big storage underneath.  pretty neat for free.

I use my folding black and decker work bench for my seat.  A good stool is on my list for fathers day for sure.

Mike has 2/0's i use them almost exclusivelly.

i think they are called fd-sr or something along those lines.

I use the #71 drill bits with them as well.  the #71 will work with the #1 blades also but no bigger.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Question about glueing - II
« on: March 19, 2012, 03:51:35 pm »
I use good old fashioned wood glue and a paint brush.

I then smash the piece between a couple of heavy weight from my home gym and leave it for a day or 2.

Worked great never a problem.

i used to use spray glue but noticed that after a while the backers were starting to peel off.  its like the glued dried out of something and stopped working.  embarrassing because i had some pieces come back for it.

Never had a problem with the wood glue other then putting too much on to where it would squirt out the front and stick to the table.

cleans up with water too so easy to use.

I lay out the piece on the baltic birch.  Then I put the piece onto another piece of backer material, I use 1/8" luan.

I cut out around the edge to make the frame as a part of this.

So now i have a border that i use for a frame and an exact size backer board.

i set those 2 aside and cut the picture out and glue it all together to the luan when done.

this way i dont need to buy frames of have the item cut to frame size.  i can cut it whatever size i think seems right.

If you have excel it is very easy.

paste the image, rezise to whatever size you want.

if its bigger then one page it will print out out on the second page and you can tape them together.

I use the smallest bits possible.

I drill the hole on the front, then turn the piece over and drill it again through the bottom in the same hole.  bores it out enough for an easy fit.  easy enough anyway.

I do this the easiest way possible.

First print the pattern on plain white paper, just the cheap stuff you swipe from work will do.

Take your spray glue and spray it very lightly, I mean very lightly, just one quick pass.

You should be able to feel its lightly tacky but not to where it is shiny and pooled up.  Thats too much.

Stick it to the wood.  If you use too much glue it will be tough to get off and require sanding or something like that.  Too little and it will fall off as you go but this is very rare for me.

Comes right off when you are done.

I have been a fan of Steves site for a while and for some dumb reason never figured he had this forum.  Glad I actually started reading and stopped just looking at the pictures long enough to join up.
