Hey John, First off Welcome to the site and a new addiction! Second, Patience! None of us were great the first time we used a scroll saw. The more hours you get behind it the better you will get. The great thing about scrolling is the learning curve is short and you will be making beautiful items in no time. You don't have to be a Steve Good or Sheila Landry right away, but with time, you will probably get there.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Interesting New Clamp!

Hey GB Thanks! Just ordered a couple. It's always a pain when you've got something small to clamp and you gotta break out the big clamps because the spring clamps wont open wide enough. These seem to be a great gap filler for just that situation. Can't wait to get them. And you cant beat the price.

Ditto to all the above! Way to cheap for the amount of work involved, regardless of the price of the wood.

I posted this on the Intarsia link, but I don't think many people go there, so I thought I would post it here as well.

Used nine different woods, Wenge, Maple, Blood wood, Walnut, Aspen,Poplar, Purple Heart, Bubinga and Red Cedar.
It?s finished with five coats of Deft Semi Gloss Lacquer and I in-layed a penny on the back for dating the year made. (Intarsia92's Idea) It is 16" in diameter.

The pattern is by Judy Gale Roberts.

Al, The way you used the picture as a guide to come up with what you did is really impressive. And than to turn it into a shadow box...wow! Now you've got my brain spinning! Your work is just so clean!

As usual, Great job!

It looks pretty good, I just wanted to point out that line size and and thickness is very important when it comes to faces. The more lines and the thicker they are the older the subject looks. Kids have very few age lines.

I hope you don't mind but I grabbed the pic and thinned some lines out and removed a few lines simply to show the importance of line thickness. I also added a little highlight to the eyes. I didn't do anything to the hair, but I would suggest combining some of those little tiny cuts into fewer and bigger lines to make it easier to cut.

You did a great job with the likeness and with a little tweaking you'll have a really nice pattern.

Bob

PS. I did this real quick, I'm sure you will do better.
