Intarsia / Re: wood
« on: August 27, 2014, 03:58:44 pm »
The finish I use depends somewhat on what wood I'm using.

For the most part, I use Danish Oil as a wipe on finish. I use that on intarsia and other scroll saw work when I'm using real wood. On intarsia pieces where I need white wood which I use aspen for, I use satin lacquer since lacquer doesn't change the wood color much at all. Often, I've used the danish oil on all the none white pieces and just lacquer on the white or blue on the same piece.

Danish oil has pretty much become my main finish though since I love the way it brings out the highlights and grain in the wood. I've almost totally gone away from gloss .

On Baltic birch plywood, I use Deft spray lacquer, mostly satin.

I'm not sure if you saw my deer on a maple slab that I posted yesterday. That wood was so beautiful, I did it a little different. I used the danish oil first and then hand rubbed about 3 coats of Tru-Oil gun-stock finish. Tru-Oil builds up hard like a poly finish but is a polymerized oil finish. Once it dried hard, I used an old 220 grit sanding mop that is worn down to probably something like 1500 grit to knock town the shine some and smooth it out to a nice hard satin glow.

Nice! I always loved doing eagles.?
Are all the patterns that you have on Photobucket ones you made? I'd like to save a copy of the eagle within an eagle if you don't mind.

Here you go, Jerry. http://www.scrollsawer.com/forum/

It's a big forum with a lot of members. Personally, I like this one much better though.

I wish there was a cheap and easy way to do it. The most I've done was rough cut slabs with my chainsaw and then run them through my planer. Not easy though and I'm limited to 12" on my planer.

It's a great topic though. Looking forward to responses.

Question, when you cut with your Alaskan Mill, what do you do to keep the wood from checking and cracking while it dries?

Russ, Is there a list of what code options are turned on for this version of Simple Machine, or is it only the buttons at the top of the create post window?

I ask because a while back I was trying to use an imbed video forum code to help someone with a Dewalt saw problem and couldn't make it work in preview.

Thanks folks!
This one is a gift, but I do get asked from time to time. I might be the worlds worst salesman though. I don't think I could sell water in the desert LOL  ;D

Usually, if someone asks me for something, I end up just telling them to reimburse me for the materials. Heck, if I already have material laying around I don't always ask for that either.

I really need to do better in that area. LOL

Brag Forum / Deer in live edge maple slab (Charles Dearing)
« on: August 26, 2014, 12:44:36 pm »
Just finished up this one. It's one of Charles Dearing's great patterns.

This was the last piece of a rough cut maple slab that I've had lying around for about 6 years. It's figured maple with some burl features in it. I used the rest back then and finally decided to use this last one. I gave it a fresh run through the planer and the bark on the left side stayed in tact. There's even a little fuzzy green moss still on some of the bark.  8) The pictured don't capture the iridescent flame in the wood, especially down by the body and foot print.

The base is walnut and the removable drop in style I usually make for this kind of thing.

This one happens to be a gift, but I'm curious.
I've made several different things like this on live edge slabs like this and I've been asked several times by people about making one for them to buy.

What would you all think something like this should sell for? I know it can vary greatly between craft fair versus gallery, etc, but what would you ask for this one for example? Don't worry, you won't hurt my feeling a bit if you say 20 bucks, LOL  ;D

Gorgeous! Love the wood choices. Is that pattern a new one? I don't remember seeing that on on Judy's site.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Spiral Blades
« on: August 25, 2014, 11:28:39 pm »
Oh, I've used them. I just used them on a couple of small areas of my last project. Only a couple spots though. I disagree that spirals are the only way to get fine detail on fretwork.

I've done mountains of fretwork and there is no way to get as fine and sharp of a cut as you can with the finer regular blades. Flying Dutchman from Mikes of course  :)
A round blade just isn't as thin as a fine regular blade.

Now that doesn't mean that some of the most beautiful work isn't done with spirals, but it can be a different look up close. Sort of like the difference between styles of artist brushes in a painting.

Actually, when I want really fine cuts, I like Mike's Superior Puzzle blades. Those are my go to for really fine cuts. I have a couple of Mikes spirals. The "New Spirals" and the spirals with flat ends. Nice blades.

Brag Forum / Re: Two hand fans from very thin "aromatic cedar"
« on: August 22, 2014, 10:15:07 pm »
Thanks guys.  The wood is 1/8" thick.  Got it from thinwoodboards on ebay.  Won't be using it as an actual hand fan because aromatic cedar is so brittle ;)

Not only that, but a fan full of beautiful holes won't move much air.  ;D

Kidding aside, those are beautiful and a wonderful gift idea.
