If you go to almost any health food store you can purchase local beeswax in 1 # blocks for next to nothing.  My 1 # block will probably last me the rest of my life.
I melt it in an old pan 3/4 cup of wax (shavings or chunks) to 1 pint of mineral oil.  Heat on very low heat you do not want it to reach a flash point.  It will become almost crystal clear.  It is now ready to transfer to a small Tupperware style container with a lid, allow it to cool to room temp and it is ready for use.

I moved mine up a little as well.  I was afraid if little ones put to much downward pressure they would blow out.  I tried pressing down and broke one of them.  I always drill my axle holes prior to cutting out the shape as suggested this does help.

The way to save even more time and money is to cut the pieces freehand no puzzle piece pattern.  The first few will take a bit longer and won't be as uniform but who says they have to look the same.  Your family and friends will still love the puzzles and most of us "puzzleheads" wouldn't be caught with a piece pattern.  I've cut 100's of jigsaw puzzles and never use a pattern.

Have you considered doing an overlay.  Cut out your project and then attach it to the rack?

One thing not mentioned and because it is so obvious some tiems overlooked.  be sure you have your blade in the right way.  You may be surprised at how many times a blade i put in upside down.  If this happens you will find excessive "chatter" and breakage of fragile parts.

New technique for darkening light woods...bake it in the oven at 450? for about 20-30 minutes keep an eye on it until you obtain the darkness you desire.  You will find it will darken all the way through the woods.  Give it a try you will be amazed.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: dust collector vs shop vac
« on: October 14, 2012, 01:25:54 pm »
1. depends on the two machines, typically a dust collector is a bit louder.
2. Yes they (dust collector) are better at the task and it is not recommended to run a shop vac for extended periods of time as they can actually over heat and cause a fire.
3. You should upgrade to 1 micron...

Sounds silly but ensure that your blade is not in upside down.  Hey it happens to all of us from time to time.  Keep the proper amount of down pressure with your finger tips & take your time.  Like Russ said, it takes time and practice.  Don't get discouraged.

All the typos would turn me off to begin with and the sellers agreement is lame to say the least.  They add on 15% to each item for their fee & they do all the listing.  Don't know how  much time they want to devote to this project but i could send them about 100 items to list and I be they would change that idea pretty quick.

Steer clear..

Nicely done.  When you get an actual paying customer (smile no neighbors or family members mooching) for the eagles what are you able to get in your neck of the woods?

The Coffee Shop / Bag Pipes...Touching story...
« on: March 24, 2012, 10:35:46 am »
A story from a bagpiper about a homeless man's funeral.

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Kentucky back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.

I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this man.

As I played Amazing Grace, the workers began to cry. They cried, I cried, we all cried together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before, and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

Have you ever tried painting the front prior to cutting?  It makes it a lot faster.  If you are okay with just painting the front or front and back and not the edges...Otherwise I spray paint mine if the entire project needs to be painted.
