General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Too much play in upper arm
« on: February 19, 2012, 11:00:08 am »
I have a Delta P-20 and had the bearing on the upper arm go out. It was causing erratic, side-to-side movement and noisy as hell. But first, make sure to check the link at the back of the upper arm. There are some screws that can loosen up. It could cause some side-to-side movement. I had those loosen up a few years ago, put a drop of Loctite on them and they haven't given me a problem since.

Hope you can get it back up and running soon.

Gene, have you tried Googling "jewelry box patterns"? I came up with a lot of hits for free patterns. I'm not sure what you are looking for, but you can probably find some online.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Material size

I agree with Al. With a regular (flat) blade, you are limited to the depth of the scroll saw. With a 16" saw, you can cut a depth of 16", but don't forget to take into account the corners. So depending on the pattern, you may only be able to cut about 11" (if my high school geometry is right). But with a spiral blade, you can cut a board that is 16" x 16".

I'm not sure about the holes in the scroll saw table. Mounting plywood would make it hard to slide the wood you are trying to cut. You could use melamine. No matter what you use, you will reduce the thickness of the wood you are able to cut.

What brand/model saw do you have?

The Coffee Shop / Re: SawStop? Not so fast says Stephen Colbert
« on: February 18, 2012, 11:42:00 am »
Dan, here's another thing to consider. Last year a guy posted that he bought a SawStop and was cutting green wood. There was enough moisture in the wood to fool the technology and all of the sudden, without touching the blade, he had to spend $150 to get a new blade and the braking device.

There is also talk about adding this technology to bandsaws and possibly other power tools. Will the madness ever end?

I think I'll start buying old table saws now and stock them up for the future. Forget the stock market, I'll make my living off selling old table saws (pre-SawStop).

I'd eat more vegies but I'm usually too full from the meat.

But I do agree that we eat too much meat. I skipped the sausage this morning and ate an apple.

That's funny!

I heard of a guy that makes pens and wanted to call his online store Pen Island. But his URL didn't look so good. I don't know if he kept that name and I don't intend to look.

Glad he is doing better. Thanks for the update.

When I read the first post I was so mad I could reply. There are bad apples everywhere, but you'd think all of our guys in uniform would take care of each other. I hope the 4 get maximum punishment and dishonorably discharged.

Great pen Bobby! You will find the scroll saw and lathe can work well together.
