General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Which Woods are best for Scroll Sawing?
« on: October 29, 2012, 07:24:40 pm »
Hi John. There are a number of reasons the blades can be breaking. Usually it's because you are pushing too hard or pushing against the side of the blade. What size blades are you using? Here's a link to Mike's Workshop where he talks about when to use what type of blade.http://www.mikesworkshop.com/whatblad.htm. Here's another link to Sloan's, http://www.sloanswoodshop.com/PDF/blade%20chart.pdf where he has a blades selection guide. These should help. I cut padauk and purpleheart and other hard woods frequently and don't break many blades.
Good luck with your scrolling.

Great job Danny. I may have to find that pattern. I have sold similar work for $30 - $50 range with the frame. I have had several folks buy them without the frame and I usually knock off the price of the frame, matting, etc. I think unframed, I would get about $20 - $25.

Great looking ornaments! Love the color. Price them whatever you feel comfortable with. When someone makes a large purchase at a craft show, I like to give them an ornament.

Well, thanks go out to a few people for this one. Crusty59 did one and I just had to give it a try. I used twine instead of leather to hole the portrait to the frame. Leather just wasn't cooperating. I also put a backer board and made the head a little smaller. I'm pretty satisfied with it. Comments and critiques welcome.

Pretty cool! I guess us non-wood burners could cut out the ornamentation.

That's a lot of sleds! If you're selling them, you better make more because they will go like hot cakes.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Turkeys
« on: September 15, 2012, 06:16:54 pm »
Last year I decided to make some unfinished, stand-up Christmas trees from 1/8' plywood. The idea is to sell them at craft shows to help parents keep their kids interested in crafts. That was a customer's idea and I thought it was great. Now, my wife says turkeys would be a great idea too. Now sure why I never come up with ideas, but I said, let's give it a try. Below is the result of her idea.

I will put the pattern in the pattern area if anyone is interested.

Couple of nice things about these: They can be painted or colored with markers, they disassemble for easy storage, and they are thin enough to stack cut. A pal from another site suggested putting name on them and using them name plates at Thanksgiving dinner. He's a smart guy.

Edited: I couldn't figure out how to add a PDF to the gallery so I am putting it on this thread.

I saw these too. I think it could easily be adapted to the scroll saw or bandsaw. A little sanding and a good finish and you have a great gift. Great find GB.
