General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: sandpaper question

It's worth the wait Clyde.  I bought a branding iron from woodcraft and it really does the job on projects.

We haven't come up with a category for Dan yet.  With that post count it might be Grand Poobah or something like that.  He is always there for any of us who need him!

Nice job Glen!  I've always been a dog lover, and never found a way to let them go that wasn't excruciating.  Dogs accept things much better than humans do.

Grits are supposed to be universal, but the type of sandpaper may be making the difference.  I forget the details, but it involves things like open coat paper vs closed, and the material used, like garnet vs others.  Different details affect the agressiveness and the life of the sandpaper.  Still I would expect 180 to be fine in any paper.  That is about the limit of what touch can determine from what I have read.

I feel your pain.  I was making the last cut on a very thin piece of purpleheart for a Christmas ornament this weekend when a crucial piece declared its independence.

Painters pyramids work well.  Any woodworkers source will have them.

Check craigslist in your area.  There are often planers for sale.  When I was looking I got lucky and found a barely used powermattic 15" helical head for a little more than a lunchbox planer at the big box stores.  I know most don't need it, but there is a world of difference between a lunchbox planer and a floor standing one.

OK, I may be a wet blanket, but I would pick my wife.  I'd rather be poor with her than rich alone.

Remember you need to run a face across a joiner before putting them into a planer.  Otherwise you will still have twisted or bent boards.  If you don't have a joiner make a sled and use wedges to stabilize the underside and then the planer can face the top side.

Good thing you made this post Dan!  I am so oblivious I missed the sticky at the top of the page and might have failed to sign up if you hadn't.

I emailed them asking to be removed from their mailing list today.  No reason given.

I agree with Dan & Dali, however there is another factor as well.  When you saw a piece do wood you often release inner stresses inside the wood which will result in some war page.  I still think uneven moisture is the main culprit though.

Looks great Al!  I caught a sale at Woodcraft on knife kits a while back and just finished making the handles out of glued up wood blanks contoured to match the knife tang, then got sheath kits from Tandy and modified them to fit.  Even better making the metal parts as well!
