Here's one I just finished. It's a Charles Dearing Pattern called On The Move. The blank is 3/4" x 8" x 15" Spalted Quilted Maple. I counted 81 cuts but may be off my one or two. It was a pleasure to cut and watch things come together.

Thanks for looking.

Nice are
Walnut
Cherry
Bloodwood

Not so nice are
Deer antler (OK, it's not wood but it stinks when cut)
I turned some Marblewood that smelled like sweaty socks.

This is from one of Steve Good's patterns. The pattern has an art deco look to it so I added the circles in the legs. I cut this on a scroll saw but I think the whole thing could be done on a band saw also. One coat of BLO over the walnut and cherry. I think I'll put a coat of varnish after the BLO completely dries.

The fit isn't perfect but I just wanted to make something yesterday.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Decal Paper
« on: January 21, 2013, 09:02:58 pm »
I've made several pens with decals (also called water slides) on them. It's really quite simple. Once you get the design printed on the decal paper, let the ink set for a while to dry. I let mine set for about an hour (probably overkill). Then spray it with a bonder (I use Tester's bonder but I think any clear lacquer will do.) Let that dry per the bonder directions. Cut the design out leaving a little extra room around the perimeter. Put in water for about 10 seconds then set it on a paper towel for about a minute. The water will allow the decal to slide off the backer (hence the term water slide). Put the decal on the pen and make sure you rub all the water and air out from under the decal. I use a small acid brush or artist paint brush. Oh yeah, make sure the pen is sanded and has a few coats of CA for the decal to adhere to. The pen should also be fairly straight (not bulbous). Once everything looks good, just let it dry over night. I then finish with CA as normal.

Here are some examples.

It's great to give you child a talent they can use later in life. Don't know if this was put on just for show or if he is really working, but man that kid is a natural. Reminds me of a mechanic down the road that has his 10 year old daughter helping him on weekends. She gets odometer readings, VIN numbers and even looks up part numbers for her dad. Very sharp young lady.

Looks great! I have some slabs of ash that I've been wanting to do something with. Maybe one of them will be a clock.

For the projects you mentioned, I'd say you need a table saw. I couldn't see doing a book case on a band saw because the table is too small. With band saws, you are limited to about 12 or 14 inch cuts. I have an idea, why not get both? ;D
