Introduce Yourself. / Re: Newbie

Welcome to the forum, I'm Jim from Texas.  When I retired I found myself wondering how I managed to get everything done while I was working full time.

I can not help with making a pattern, but I did manage to make the insert with the missing pieces back in place.  Hopefully that will help someone else do the pattern

Not having an Ex-21 but seeing one in my immediate future, is there any one who could post a picture of what y'all are talking about to give me some idea?

And that brings up a question I have been mulling over, other than the difference in throat depth, isn't the ex-16 and ex-21 identical machines? Why does everyone seem to get the ex-21?

Daniel,  I am new too, Santa brought my saw.  Things I found that helped, some were suggestions from the good people here were: relax your shoulders and breathe, concentrating makes you tense up and the blade feels it.

If you have used a jig saw or power saw in the past, the scroll saw is different.  Power sawing you look ahead where you want to cut, the scroll saw you have to look at the point where the blade hits the wood or maybe 0.5cm ahead of it.  If you move your eyes the saw seems to take over.

I took the foot off the saw and that helped too, the part that rides on the wood to "hold it down"

Tip the whole saw toward you, I put wood under the rear legs of the saw, what a difference that made, I have about 9 cm under the rear.

We all have a dominant eye, sit or stand so that the dominant eye is in line with the cut line. If you need to know how to determine the dominant eye let me know.

Take a break every so often and walk around.

Barb, that is a good one, and I just happen to have some extra tiles, I'll give it a try

@ Dan, now that is an interesting thought, I may try that trick with the torch.

@ Kepy, Imaginative!  I have a 4" belt but might try that just to see

Thanks all.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Fret work sanding
« on: February 02, 2016, 02:16:40 pm »
Ok I am stumped.   I have tried everything I can think of to sand a piece with fret work, fret work that has very narrow strips or stiles (if you are into windows).

I don't break all of them but one or two will break.

Suggestions, tips, please?

Dan I will keep that in mind for when I revisit them, thanks

Thanks y'all, that is pretty much what I have been doing, inside to outside.

I tried a spiral blade, Looking back on it, that was funny, the slightest twitch and it was all over. Maybe after a while when I get better and more comfortable with things I will revisit them.

Curious whether everyone starts cutting the fret work and leaves the outside perimeter cut to the end, or visa versa?  Do you think it matters? Why?

This starter saw has a fixed upper arm, really limits things. The piece I am trying now is larger than anything I have done to date, and after fighting it yesterday it dawned on me (last night) that I ought to trim the waste off and then make the final outside cut later.  Then I started wondering why not just cut the perimeter now.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: newbie's starter project

@ Danny - I saw something like that a long time ago and drew it, then scanned and cleaned it up in photoshop. What I ended up with is less a pattern than a blotchy picture and I "interpreted" the edges as I was cutting.  Can't see it in the pic, but the back of flames have a red tint to it, I steel wooled the flames and put a sedona red stain on top of the red oak stain and the red is subtle enough to show in person.

@ tinker - Thanks tinker, I have the Porter Cable from Lowes.  I replaced the plastic puck that is in the middle of the table early this week and it has made a difference.  The puck was not flush with the table and it was sagging in the center.  I read a thread where someone else had done that and it made me examine my machine.
