General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dipping & Spraying

Great tips Jim. I used a very similar method for spraying and included a vacuum cleaner at the back of the box to suck the fumes and overspray away.

Cheers mate.

Hi Russ, last time I checked there were only 24 hours in a day and 7 days a week, so where are you getting all your time from for your projects. 8)

I have checked out both of the links you have provided. Well done on both of them. Just one question though, your Avatar doesn't look like the bloke in the 2 links. ;D

Keep up the great work.

Dave.

P.S.    You had better watch out for Gage taking your job, he did a fine job on the ghost and his commentary.

Hi Erewhon....I express the same sentiments as Judy. Your sense of humour shines through loud and clear. This is a big step in your healing process.

As far as the Polar Bear goes, I guess you can learn how to cook and see what it tastes like. We have made food from roadkill here in Australia, but not from polar bears, more like kangaroo.  ;D

Keep on track with the way you are handling your situation and good luck.

G'Day Malcolm, I tried your link to designerwoods and it is incomplete.

http://designer-woods.com/

I checked out the site and I agree with you, he is a real master at what he does. Thanks for the link.

I wished he was here in Australia where I live, I would love to visit his workshop. But I guess seeing it on the internet will have to suffice.

The Men's Shed idea was first started in Australia a number of years ago, and yes, they are a great idea. The concept is slowly gaining momentum around the world and men are starting to realise the benefits of belonging to a shed in their area. It is not just about making things in the wood or metal shop, it is the mate-ship and having someone to talk too about what goes on in their lives. I would highly recommend any bloke to join a shed if they have one close by.

Some time ago I cut round hold in two 3/8" pieces of clear plastic to raise the table to use more of the blade.  Stuck the two together with double sided tape.  Then attached it to the table with double sided tape.  Worked just fine but it's difficult to remove from the table.  I don't use it anymore because it to much trouble.  The blade cost is negligible compared to the cost of good hard wood.

To eliminate the use of double sided tape, you can use a similar method I used for my bobbin sander (see earlier post)
Place a sheet of MDF or ply on top of your table and leave about 1" hanging over all the way around. Draw around the shape of the table and cut out the shape that is the actual table. Then using a gauge or your finger, draw a pencil line 1" all the way around. When you cut this out you should now have your locating ring. Glue this ring onto another piece of MDF or Ply (use what ever thickness you require) and then cut out the table to the shape of the ring. You can decide whether you just use a centre hole or if you cut a slot through the table to allow easier placement without taking your blades off.

G'Day Malcolm and welcome to the forum.

I spent some time checking out the link to your website 'Badger Woodcrafters' I am impressed with the range of band saw boxes you have made. You are right in saying that most people give up making them because it is too hard. We have just added a new band-saw at the Men's Shed I belong to. Band-saw Boxes are something we can now get into and I think every member will probably want one to take home.

Thanks for sharing with us what you and your son make together.

Computer questions / Re: computer problem

Hi Brummie, I will include a link to a question I posed...."Why does McAfee always show when not on computer."

https://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081226041327AAqIFyJ

From the best answer in the above link, they say everyone is expected to be a security expert when on the computer.

Do you have any security on your computer?

I use Kaspersky and it has a 'Safe Money' aspect that allows transactions to be made and to do the banking and pay my bills.

I think some of the IT members will give you a more informed answer when they read your query.

I do wish I could get a better view of images.  The + only allows a very small difference and when I click on them, they show up sideways, so it's rather awkward.  Is anyone else having problems I wonder?

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm, I have the same issue and to overcome this, I right click the picture and do a save to my computer. There I can enlarge the picture to see it in greater detail. The funny thing is, the picture comes out with the right orientation, I do not need to rotate it. Computers. :)

You are very good at the intarsia work Brian. This is something I would like to get into when I finally retire and get more time to myself.

Thanks for sharing.

I agree with you Jim. I am thinking about a backing board for the whole design to sit on. I am still working out what timber to use for both the design and the backing.

I guess I can keep thinking whilst making my pens.

Cheers mate.

Dave on that sign, the "R" in free - Either I cut it short by mistake or (in my opinion) the left down stroke of the letter might just as well extend all the way down.

And the letter "W" is not connected to much of anything - be careful, I almost lost the last part of the letter when sanding

Edit:  I'm looking forward to seeing your cutting of the sign, be nice to compare my 2 months experience to your expertise.  So if you would post it, I would appreciate it, kind of the only way I can see for sure where I need to improve, comparing like items I mean.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the heads up on the issues with your pattern. I am using a different pattern with the glass on the right hand side. I found a full picture on the web and printed it out. I then drew around the parts to cut out and got them photocopied in two different sizes. It will be a while before I can get into cutting them out as I have lots of Pen orders from one of my other hobbies, penturning.
I will post pictures of them when I am finished.

Incidentally, I only have has much experience as you and my total of scroll-sawing amounts to some Christmas decorations I cut out in December.

Having lived in Texas for over 10 years in Dallas I can tell you that stupid drivers grow on trees there and it's harvest season year round..
I got my saw on CL as well though it was just a dremel, but the price was right.. Congratulations..

To all of you that think stupid drivers originate in Texas, take a look at this video to actually see where they were born. You do not need to speak Russian to understand how atrocious the driving is in their country. They have stated that since the use of Dash Cameras in Russia, that the driving skills have improved. All I can say is, if they have improved, what the hell were they like before the dash cameras!!!!
