General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Interesting New Clamp!
« on: September 28, 2012, 11:08:14 pm »
That could be handy.  It is not too bad a price, if it works of course.  I have never ordered from Peachtree.  I do see a lot of people on this site linking to them.

This is slightly off the subject.  What really aggravates me about spring clamps like these, is the plastic pads at the top are always facing the wrong way when I try to use them.  The worse part is I never notice until I am clamping something and only have the one hand.  I know this is not a big problem in the whole scheme of things, just saying  :).

Thanks GB for the info.

Your work is really nice.  The fact that you do it by hand is nothing short of amazing!  Thanks for letting me see it.

Sorry, that is one of the most aggravating parts of fretwork projects.  I have found it is best for me to put that pattern aside for a time.  If I jump right back in, to the same project, I invariably make another mistake pretty quickly.  I think I try and hurry to make up for lost time.  Scrolling and hurrying are a recipe for disaster, for me anyway.

Hang in there.

I prefer the 1/8 BB over the 1/4.  And I usually use a FD UR#1.  The most I have stacked is three.  As dg said make sure your blade is at 90 degrees.

I have never got the feel for using spiral blades.  There are certain patterns that seem to require them.  I sometimes have to adjust the pattern to fit my skill level.  I have been scrolling for some time and consider myself a decent scroller.  But spirals just frustrate me and I am all about a relaxing hobby.  :)

Very nice Dan.  I grabbed a copy.  I make little projects for my grandkids pre-school and these will be perfect for around Thanksgiving.  Thanks.

Hi Judy-

I really like my Dewalt.  However if I could afford it, and one day I will, I would get an Excalibur EX-21.  A good friend of mine got the 30", it is impressive looking, but he has had nothing but trouble with it.  That may be just a bad saw and not a design problem.

Yes, I would be fat and happy if I had the EX 21 as my everyday saw and my Dewalt as a spare.  :)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Bowl Sander
« on: August 21, 2012, 12:51:37 am »
Hi Louis!

Bowls take a lot of sanding.  I think the best way to sand them is with a spindle sander.  Steve has a video where he tours his shop and it show a spindle sander in action.  You may already be familiar with them.  The round spindles come in various diameters and they go up and down as well as turning.  They are a great machine for scrollers, very versatile.  It is best to get a spindle sander with a movable base.  It allows you to sand at different angles (like most good scrollsaws).  Well worth the extra price, if you can swing it.

The other way is good old elbow grease.  Sanding by hand is tiring and with bowls it is even worse.

I know what you mean Danny.  I usually take a little time off from the shop during the really hot days of summer.  Then when the shadows start getting a little longer my desire to get scrolling comes roaring back.  This could also have something to do with receiving the new ornament patterns in the mail. :)

The end of August makes me realize the year is moving by and I'd better get busy.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Thin Cuts Breaking
« on: August 11, 2012, 12:31:10 am »
Hi Tony-

You have already received a lot of good advice.  Two things that I always recommend to people are stack cutting and slowing down.  Stack cutting will support those really delicate cuts. Also, try and leave the cutouts in place for support.  When you watch scroll saw videos you see people crank up the speed and every new scroller tries to copy that (I did the same thing).  Slow down your speed, you will have more control and the blade won't be as aggresive, you should have less tear out.  As you get more comfortable the speed will come.  I still slow the blade way down for many delicate cuts.  Good luck.

PS - Shelia made a great point.  Don't scrimp on the plywood.  Good baltic birch ply will have a lot fewer voids and that is good for your blood pressure.  :)

Mike has the fastest turnaround time of anyone.  The FD blades are my favorite and you can't beat the service from Mike's Workshop.

You are going to like the Rikon saw, Termite.  It is one of the best 14" inch saws for the money.

I hope you like your new saw.  Even though I really like my Dewalt, I hope to one day own a EX21.
