« on: December 12, 2013, 12:02:03 am »
Those are great looking ornaments. My in laws  live in OK they would like that one for sure.
Do you know if he designed that himself or is there a pattern for it?

those look pretty good to me. when you peel off the pattern no one sees the mistakes. good job they will love them

Thanks, that is what I thought. If they don't see the pattern they may not find the mistakes as easy.

I made three of these for my Sisters for Christmas. I know there a lot of mistakes and miscuts in them but I hope they won't notice. HA HA

I have a lot to learn and need lots of practice. Hope to get a better quality saw soon.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Question about my finish on projects
« on: December 11, 2013, 02:09:14 pm »
I put spar varnish on my projects with brush but there are some small places i can't get to with brush. I was in town and found a can of Helsman spray urethane. Would it work to spray that over the varnish to cover everything.
Thanks

I have a table I built the top is 3/4 plywood its heavy, bolted down on top of a thick woven rug, its helped alot. Use something like rubber thick carpet or a thick rug to dampen the vibration, also something that will help those small delicate parts, get a piece of thin, like a 1/16th or 1/8th ply, cut to shape of table and either glue it down or like mine I taped it under between the wood and table, with a hole just big enough for the blade to go through, doing this does two things supports the small parts and also keeps the blade from grabbing the wood and shaking it, thus vibrating it and breaking it, to me it also helps in getting clean cuts.

Thank you I was wondering what to do to fill that large hole in the plastic table insert. I think that is some of my problem there is no support right at the blade for those delicate cuts. I will try that

General Scroll Saw Talk / I have found a couple saws on CL
« on: December 08, 2013, 07:49:24 pm »
First I apologize for posting so much here lately. I am an old fart like a kid with new toy with this scroll saw thing.
I am looking to get a different saw I really enjoy this scrolling. I found a couple of RBI  and 1 Excalibur saw on CL
They are within a 100 or so dollars of each other in price.
Is one better or are they both good saws? I really want one with very little vibration because I would like to try some more detailed fret work after I get some experience.
Thanks,

Branson club is disbanding. The usual, people get older, move, etc. Ten years is often the life of different kinds of clubs. Think a couple of members are or were from northern Arkansas; will see if I can get a hold of someone.

Thank you Pat I really appreciate that.

I was wondering if there is anyone near Mt. Home, AR that is scroller? I am trying to learn how to properly drill and cut patterns. I have a lot of questions and sure could use some help.

If someone would be willing to meet with me and teach some tricks to the trade I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks,
George

About 4 hrs. into my second stack of those hummingbird patterns a big chunk of the inside cut of the flower broke out. The craftsman saw I have sure seems to vibrate a lot. Does anyone else have a problem with craftsman saws?

 I think that contributed to the breakage. I might be able to go ahead and salvage them but they won't look as good as it is supposed to.

Oh well, I have a lot to learn about scrolling but I love it!

General Scroll Saw Talk / My first try at stack cutting
« on: December 04, 2013, 08:16:57 pm »
Just finished my first 3 stack cuts. Quite a few bobbles and miss cuts but I am fairly happy with them. I am starting on my second stack, I have to make 10 of these for Christmas presents.
     I still have to put the clear coat on them. I made the backing board out of cedar and the humming bird out of 1/8 " Baltic Birch.

Frankly it sounds to me like the saw speed is the culprit!
Crank up the speed, hold your hand as close to the blade as possible. Bear down just enough to keep the wood in contact with the saw table.
Make damn sure you have plenty of tension!

~~~GB~~~
Thanks everyone for the help i think my speed is part ofproblem
I slowed my speed way down because of the bad vibration of my saw.
I am going to remount my saw and put rubber pads under the feet to help with vibration. Then i'll turn speed back up and try again
