Anytime I do a portrait of kids, I always do 2 copies.  I give the second one as a freeby to the buyer.  That way they have one to keep and one to give to grandma.  This raises your praise factor to their friends by 100%.  PS- don't tell them ahead of time, suprise them.
Being you stack cut your only expense is the extra board.

I use a propane heater that has a blower.  It uses the same type tank that my BBQ grill uses.  Got it at the red big box store when they put them on sale a few yrs ago.

Can't find any reason why anyone would like to see a picture of a 69 yr old man besides I like my avatar.

As far as the blade to use, its what you feel most comfortable using.   I use a 2/0 blade for the small intricates like most of the ones in portraits.  My favorite blade is a crown tooth.  Use it in all sizes for most of my projects.  A lot of people don't like them as they tend to pull up more saw dust.  I have tried spiral blades but can't get use to them.  Best bet is to try several kinds and use what you like.

Try the Krylon spray glue.  I get get at Michaels and use the 40% off coupon from the Sunday paper and it only cost $4.20 including tax. Works just the same as 3M
