Thanks Marcellarius. If I remember correctly that is Brush Script font. I actually used Microsoft Publisher to make the pattern. I could only print about 4 letters per page and overlapped them to make the entire pattern. Gets a little tricky when the name was as long as Cristalyn.

Brag Forum / Poor Choice of Wood... Or not!?!
« on: July 25, 2021, 10:13:28 pm »
Been working on this piece for about a month now. The wood is 11 x 14 MDF laminated with an unknown veneer and is 3/4 inches thick. I thought the veneer was somewhat unique with the contrast of light and dark. I stained it with a natural oil and then sprayed with about a half dozen coats of clear gloss sanded with 300 between each coat. The picture makes it look like the finish is rough but it is very smooth. The piece is extremely heavy and gave me a fit trying to cut it on my small table. I used both Pegus #3 and #5 MGT and a few FD #5 Ultra Reverse. (This wood was tough on blades.) To clarify, the wood was reclaimed from a table that had been trashed. My wife works for a school and their mascot is a lion. Needless to say she has claimed this piece for herself.

Great job. I believe you've "locked" yourself into the hobby of scrolling!

DanO,

I checked your profile and didn't see an email listed for you. Mine is dakota00@intrstar.net. I work second shift so it will be tonight after I get home before I could send you the third pattern. Just shoot me an email and I'll send it to you.

The second... Still haven't figured out how to attach multiple pictures on a single post.

DanO,

I apologize. I thought this was a different project. The patterns were received online with no names attached. I would be happy to send you what I've got. The two round patterns are within Steve's size limit and I'll attach them. The larger piece is outside the limits and I can send it to you by email if you like.

DanO,

The patterns are from Steve's collection. I believe they are titled "Horse Oval." Good luck on your cut. Sorry if I didn't mention this in my original post.

I still haven't figured out how to include multiple pictures in a single post. I've reduced the size to be in compliance with Steve's size restrictions but still can't figure it out. This is the second of three.

Had a request to do a name for my niece's stepdaughter. This was the first time I did everything from start to finish... creating a pattern, printing, cutting and finishing. Well my niece liked it so well that she wanted one for herself. She wanted the blue to match another project I had completed. I knew what would come next so I went ahead and did one for her husband as well. Anyway, I'm happy how they turned out.

Also, I'm know I'm not the only one scrolling. There has to be other projects being completed. Come on, lets see them!

Finished a couple projects this past weekend. Both are from Steve's patterns (thanks Steve). The lighthouse was really fun to complete and I got a little creative on the finish. Notice the lights are on in the house and lighthouse. The "Dogs Make Me Happy" was a project for a charity the wife asked me to do. She picked out the finish which is an antique oak. The backing board is flat whereas the front is gloss. The antique oak would not have been my choice but... happy wife, happy life.

Thanks all. The fit and finish for this project is probably one of my best next to a "Welcome" sign I did for a gift. This one was a lot simpler to complete even though each had three layers whereas the "Welcome" sign was only a single layer. I have found the finishing can easily make or break a good project. I just finished an eagle project that I thought was ruined when I finished staining. I was using a very dark stain and filling all the fret cuts caused the face of the project to look very blotchy. I had to let it dry completely and then gave it a good sanding to remove the botched up face from the gummy stain. This created a fine sawdust gummy stain that was all over the project. Not giving up I spent more time cleaning than what it took to cut it out. The end result turned out pretty decent. I had it sold but the wife already put claim on it. That's okay, I've got the wood to make another... and now I know how to prevent gumming up the face when I stain the frets.

Thanks for the helpful hints. I started the hummingbird project and was about half way through when, again, I had a chip break out ruining the project. Part of the problem is this wood is some I had on hand and is probably 20+ years old. Additionally, the quality isn't great either. I do plan to purchase a better quality wood but as I'm sure you have experienced, wood prices are through the roof. I've even resorted to breaking down old cabinets and furniture looking for usable wood. (No, I'm not destroying my home and contents, this is material that was stored in an old shed and the owner no longer wanted. Although, I do have a dining room table that is solid oak that is probably 150 years old.) Just kidding.
