Very nicely done Jim.  You definitely have a ton more patience than I do.  I love those patterns when cut but hate to cut them hehe.  Thanks for sharing this wonderfully done cutting with us.

Excuse the question, but what is "Intersecting Word Art"?

Intersecting word art is what this - see below  has been named.  Essentially it is a overlapping words done in such a way as to be able to read both.

You can put a lot of information there if you are creative on placement, size of type and size of the project as a whole.  There are several online tutorials such as this one - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrnbS3smA6I

If you go to YouTube and do a search for intersecting word art you should find several the one I listed is the one that I used to learn on.  Hope this answers your questions.

I agree those would be really nice gifts. but do seem a bit low priced.  Not counting the time to cut, just the design time would take awhile I would think.  But then I have never designed one.  When I was in Real Estate way back when, I would end up paying about $100 or more for a gift.  DW, how long does it take to design the sign?  You are speaking of the type that has the block style letters with the scrolled letters over them aren't you?

Larry

Larry it takes about an hour ( a relaxed hour )  to make one.  It is not real hard to do.  If I was just going to market to the Realtors in the area then I might consider upping the price I ask, however since in my area there are a lot of folks that like these signs and are not real well off that price I mentioned is what the market here will support here is all.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: dewalt 788 type 2
« on: November 23, 2015, 10:25:34 pm »
All I have had is a Type 2 so I do not have a comparison.  I have heard that the quality has been getting better however I have no direct evidence of it.  Unless you are ready to shell out considerably more for a Excaliber a Dewalt in my opinion will do nicely unless you are going into production work then I would spend more on the next level up from the Dewalt.

Lakelad it will depend upon what you are cutting.  For most cutting in soft woods such as pine a #3 or #5 is the way to go although you can use a #7 or #9 as well.  The #3 and #5 will allow you to make tighter turns.

Computer questions / Re: Kindle E - readers
« on: November 21, 2015, 09:14:39 pm »
If you are in an area that does not have WiFi there is a good chance that 3g will be available.  If all you are going to do is read then 3g is superfluous.  If you are watching movies, searching the internet, online shopping etc then having 3g is beneficial.  So in my opinion it depends upon what you are wanting to do with the Kindle.  I have one of the older ones and generally use it to read.  I have at times searched the internet but 3g was included when I purchased the unit.

Introduce Yourself. / Re: G'Day from Adelaide, Australia.

The Ryobi is an ok saw to start off with.  There are a good many of us that use the Dewalt 788 some like the Excalibur.  There are a lot of saws at different prices and functionality.  I had a Hitachi scroll saw before I got my Dewalt.  It was a good saw but I wore it out hehe.  My suggestion is when you are ready to get one for yourself that you ask folks that scroll there.  They will be better able to guide you in what is available, easy ( easier ) to get, etc.  Looking forward to seeing your work.

Welcome Dave.  There is about 200 years of accumulated knowledge here.  Feel free to ask questions and show off your work.  We love pictures :)  Scrolling is addictive but therapeutic.  What brand of saw do you have?

Ask Steve a question. / Re: MDF Finish
« on: November 19, 2015, 07:51:06 am »
I have just created my first project and am now hooked on scrollsaw work. As a novice my first project was made from MDF and I now want to stain it a dark colour. How can I do this. I am in UK so please use suggestions I can get here.

Thanks

Love the site Steve

Steve,
Two things, first congratulations on your addiction.  And MOST important - MDF dust is really harmful so please wear a good dust mask.  As for staining as Don has mentioned MDF does not really do well with staining but it does paint well, IF you seal the edges otherwise it will act like a sponge and soak up the paint.  My suggestion is to seal with shellac the whole project, then with thinned out paint apply thin coats of paint to achieve the color you are looking for.  Looking forward to seeing pictures of your project when it is complete.

I have been on ETSY since 2009 and have had little problems.  I understand that sometimes this happens.  Sometimes the customer takes a while to respond.  I have had several customers that I designed banks for that have taken a fair amount of time to get back with me.  Had one that went in to the hospital another went on vacation and forgot that they had started a conversation about a bank.  In your case I think I would  in the future charge a small deposit non refundable of course for the workup of the pattern then if they decide to go ahead with the portrait then yo can charge them the rest.
