Here's one from Charles Dearing's book. This is cut from a slab of buckeye burl. It measures 13" x 20" x 3/8" thick. I used black matting for the background and added 1/4" ply for added support because the burl is so thin. Only took about 2-1/2 hours to drill and cut with a #1 spiral.

Thanks for looking.

+1 on the sanding sealer. I used it on two pine cabinets. When I stained them, the stain went on very evenly and the cabinets look great.

A good way to attach the cross is with the doomahickies (??) that come on earrings. Just drill a hole in the top of the cross and insert the thingamabob with some epoxy on the end. That way you can make the cross less than 1/4" thick. (Sorry, I just don't know what those loopy things are called.)

Also, I would think the beeswax would wear off much faster than polyurethane.

How about olive wood? It looks very nice, durable and easy to cut. It also sands well. I'm not sure about the finish, but I think any finish rubbing against skin and clothes would cause it to wear faster.

Amen! I have a "smart phone". I was so excited I wanted to try all the bells and whistles. I used the voice app to send a text to my wife. She asked what I was doing for lunch.
I said, "I'm meeting Dan at Wendy's."
What my wife received was, "I'm eating Dan and Wendy."
Honestly, I'm not a cannibal.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: BLO
« on: March 06, 2013, 05:52:22 pm »
BLO is made by heating linseed oil which thickens it, but also gives it the property of drying a whole lot faster. Most manufacturers add solvents and metallic dryers to raw linseed oil to give it the same properties as the boiled stuff.

I use to dip my ornaments in BLO, wipe them off after 10 minutes, and hang them to dry. After two days they still seemed a bit tacky. Then, like Merlin suggested, I mixed the BLO with mineral spirits 50/50 and they dried over night.

Just remember, no finish on outdoor furniture is permanent.

This one is cut from a not-so-good piece of cherry. There was some good sized pieces of insect damage on the back but I thought I'd give it a try. I'm not thrilled with it. It's about 15" x 8" and took about 3 hours. I went against my norm and used FD#3 spirals. It saved a little time cutting but I did spend a little more time cleaning the fuzzies. Finished with one coat of BLO followed by four coats of satin poly.

I ordered the pattern with some wood from Sloan's. Problem is...I was in such a hurry to cut the pattern that I didn't make a copy. Oh well, not the first dumb thing I've done.

I don't think BLO will hold up outdoors very well. I would let it cure for about a week and add a few coats of spar varnish. I've done this on two outdoor items and they seem to hold up well. Just my two pennies.

When cutting plywood, I use flat blades instead of spirals. It takes me a little longer in the cutting, but I hate torching and sanding.

I've made several frames of 10" x 12" with mitered corners. I haven't use any brads or nails, just glued them up and clamped them. They are all still holding up very well. If I were to make a large frame for some heavy work I would consider using brads.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Basement Help Sawing

I have my scroll saw in the basement right now for the same reason. I don't have it in its own room, it just sits in a corner. I have a box fan with a filter and it removes about 95% of the dust. What the filter doesn't catch falls on the floor below the saw and fan. It can be a little noisy for the wife upstairs, but mainly because I like to listen to music when sawing. I haven't had any issues with dust getting into the house vents. Hope this is useful info.

Great piece! Hope you don't mind if I steal the idea.  ;)
