General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Bench belt sander
« on: June 24, 2012, 01:49:17 pm »
My bench belt sander is the most used tool in my shop.  I use it to sand the edges of 11" x 8" x 2" cedar boxes I make with images inlayed into the lids.  I also do intarsia.  I had a Royobi 4"x24" belt sander and it worked well for me for many years.  I now have a Harbor freight 6" x 48" belt sander and like it better still. This saw is priced at about $200.  I do not use  the disk sander part of these saws at all.

I have a DeWalt 735 also and agree it is a great tool.  I bought an accessary for it. a hose and bag type adapter to fit a garbage can.  Works well.  They make a LOT of sawdust!

Consider a $26 Black and Decker "dremel type tool" I prefer it to dremel.  Walmart has it.

I like high gloss, as do my customers ,it seems.  I use triple thick clear finish from Walmart. It is a fast drying acrylic.

Thanks for the help.  I have old eyes so I have the whole screen set to 125% and when I do, there is nothing on that yellow bar under Steve's photo. I now have my nose close to the screen and sized to 100% and I see it................  Now to remember this trick......

Keeping your first saw is a good idea.Having a second saw is useful for me.  I have two Hegners.  One has a 3/8" stroke and the other is set to a 3/4" stroke.  I use the short stroke one to do all my inlay work.  I have the table tilted to just the angel that works best for me.  I leave it set at that angel and use my other saw for all other work, especially when cutting thicker material.

I once had a DeWalt 788 and it had that knocking sound also. I opened it up and found a nut had fallen off.  This nut connects the motor to the rest of the mechanisms.  It kept falling off as soon as I started it.  I finally put some locktite on that nut and that fixed it.  I sold that saw and bought a Hegner.

All this math....and computations  come down to.... "what will the market bear?" That is ALL that matters.  Figure this out,  and you will find what your efforts are actually worth. Not the other way around.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Recommendations for a band saw
« on: April 03, 2012, 06:00:44 pm »
I have a Grizzly GO555 band saw with  a riser block .  I use it mostly for re-sawing and have often re-sawn 12" boards with it.  I use wood slicer blades from Highland and they work well.  I buy 1 1/8" cedar and re-saw it to 3/8" to make boxes with.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Ebay
« on: March 25, 2012, 03:44:07 pm »
I used to make functioning fireplace bellows with carved fronts and offered them on ebay for $30.  There were others on there that were selling for $5.  Some looked pretty good in the photos. Some were even antiques.  Needless to say, I never sold any. In my experience ebay is for bottom feeders/buyers.  Not for sellers of crafted items made in the USA.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: How do you apply your pattern?
« on: March 19, 2012, 10:17:46 pm »
I cover the wood, top and bottom with cellophane packing tape, spray glue pattern on top, and cut.  Tape and pattern come off in one piece easily and the tape on the bottom allows the wood to slide well on the saw table.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Workin with a new blade.
« on: March 19, 2012, 04:54:26 pm »
The new blade is a bit too aggressive for you, right now.  Look for a less aggressive saw blade, to use, until you have some more experience. Then you could go back to using those more aggressive blades.
