I cheat on the cost of the labels.  I take the empty ink cartridges from my office to Staples and recycle them for the rewards credit they give you.  There is no way to recycle them to benefit the office, because the source I am required to order from doesn't accept them.  Then by the time I need a box of labels I have most of the cost covered.  It's all above board and approved.  I get $2 per cartridge.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: colorful wood stain?
« on: December 12, 2012, 09:59:48 am »
Woodcraft and other stores carry dyes for staining.  I once built a bunch of wooden bubble gum machines from Steve's plan and dyed them using coloring intended for cake decorating dissolved in alcohol.  It worked well and has lasted for several years.  You can get it at any craft store.

Computer questions / Re: Playing a DVD Question.... :+}
« on: December 11, 2012, 10:42:55 am »
Danny, it is possible it was never intended to be viewed on a dvd player.  Many dvds are produced for viewing on a computer and will not work in a dedicated player because the format is wrong.  Many recording programs ask you before recording if the DVD is intended for a dvd player for the same reason.

That was a great story.  It's interesting how you get to meet special people in your daily life.  Years ago I met and became friends with a man where I work on MacDill Air Force Base who was one of the original WWII glider pilots who landed behind enemy lines in unpowered aircraft.  We still visit often.  He is 91 now and still a real character.

Hey Dan, this problem seems to come up with most saws.  Maybe we could get Carter to make roller guides for scrollsaws like the ones they make for bandsaws Huh?

As to the hold down, everyone I know takes them off.  They just get in the way.  You will learn to hold the wood firmly with your finger (it doesn't take too much pressure) so you really don't need it.

I don't use a dewalt, but maybe the purpose of the extra piece will become apparent when you are mounting the table.

I wonder if that fellow ever tried to build anything from a set of plans.

Enjoy your new saw, and prepare to become addicted.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: best thickness to learn/practice with?
« on: December 07, 2012, 10:10:14 am »
Hate to be ambiguous, but it all depends on what you are trying to make and what blades you are using.  There is a relationship between the blade size and type and the wood thickness and density.  If you just want to practice, maybe some simple 3/4 inch pine with a larger blade like a #7, or go to some 1/4 inch plywood, slow the blade speed and use a #3 blade.  You will find what works best for you.
