Spray it with polyurethane before cutting. Be sure to have it laying flat and not get too much poly on it and get runs. Two or three light coats should help a lot.

Pattern Requests. / Re: Band Saw Boxes

I think that bandsaw boxes are suppose to be more "free form" and patterns are rare.
Just get a block of wood, sketch a basic shape of what you want and start cutting. If you have seen any videos of people making bandsaw boxes, you know how to make the drawers and back etc.
As suggested, look at Steve Ramsey's video on "WWMM" (Wood Working for Mere Mortals). He can be found on Youtube also.

Door skin material is about 1/8" thick and does not hold up real well for scrolling. (DAMHIKT) You can buy it in full sheets (4' x 8') and is fairly cheap. However, if you cut a door apart, I think you will find a bunch of short pieces glueing the two sides together much like a honey comb and after removing that, the back side will have glue and splinters all over it. I don't think you are going to like it but that does not stop you from trying it and see what you get.
As far as using solid wood from various pieces of furniture, I think you are good to go. It seems to be a lot of trouble and hard work to me but, I grant you that it is cheaper than buying new wood and you can get some really nice pieces I expect.
Recycling old pallet wood seems to be the big thing in other types of wood working these days and if you have to time and tools to break up old pallets and cut and plane the wood to good sizes for use, there a lot of really nice things being made from it.

Troy,
I see on your blog that you are mostly into cutting crosses and I've done a few myself.
Here is one that I designed myself and thought you might be interested in it. It is cut from 1/2" purple heart wood (altho it doesn't look like it in the picture)
You (or anyone else) are free to use it as a pattern if you like it. I don't have a pattern to download because I do all of mine by hand on paper.
It shouldn't be too hard to sketch one up yourself very close to what I did.

Troy,
Sorry, I must have erased all the other pictures. I've searched through my computer and camera both and can't find them. As I said, it has been some time ago that I built it. I have over 200 pictures of other projects and probably "cleaned" the albums a few times and some pictures go into file 13 every time.  :(
I may try to get in touch with the lady who commissioned the project and see if her son still has it so I could get new shots of it.

Hey Troy,
Making the cross was the easy part. ;D The hard part was making it all come apart and fold up flat for transportation and making the table of the music stand adjustable.!  :o  I'll see if I can find some pictures of the back side to show you. It took some engineering and planning.  ;)
I built this about five years ago.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Cutting plastic

Slowing the speed of the blade down helps some also. The faster speed causes heat in the material no matter what the material is. Even wood will burn somewhat (especially cherry) and the thicker it is the more heat will be generated.

I can't make a pattern but if someone will, I say go for it, don't sweat the small stuff and give it to your father in law ASAP.
If someone sues you send them to me, I'll handle it.  ;)

I have to give the driver credit for coming up with such a lame excuse by admitting that he doesn't know how to park a car with out the car doing it by itself.  :P ::)

Nice job!
I've made several crosses of a similar design. In fact, I made one big enough to be used for a music stand! Admittedly, I didn't use a scroll saw, I used a jig saw for that one. It was a commission from the mother of a local Christian guitarist/singer and his sister.

I've been retired for eight years. The first six weren't bad but then my wife retired too.   ;D
