This goes along with everyone's answer.  The most important thing for me is practice. I had a lot of trouble with proper tension like Graybeard mentioned.  But once I got a feel for my machine I stopped thinking about what tension to use.  I am still a novice but the more I cut, the better I get.

NIce work Marshall.  I use pieces of hardwood that I have laying around.  It is great to use up those pieces that are too small for much else.  I usually use 1/2 to 3/4 width.  I give them all away and a lot of the kids attach them to their bookbags.  I use spray lacquer because it dries so fast and use a brown paper bag to knock down the grain between coats.  Brown paper bags are just like super fine sandpaper.  They will shine up the piece after the last coat as well.

Nice work Cherie.  I hope one day to try and make my own patterns.  Not there yet.  I thank your children for their service to our country.  I know you are proud of them and probably a little anxious at times.

Hi Gordo,

I use the Flying Dutchman Reverse blades and I get them from Mike's Workshop.  I mainly use the #3 and #5's for most cutting.  Mike has some nice jigsaw puzzle blades, also.  Get in touch with him and he will send you a introductory sample of five of his most popular blades.  Olsen makes nice blades (as Gary said) but I have better luck with the FD blades.  Mike is great to talk with and will provide you with excellent customer service.

Hi Janet -
I was thinking about what I could do when I retired from the Postal Service, as a hobby.  I have always loved watching woodworking shows and very impressed with things made of wood.  As a complete novice I wanted to do something relatively safe.  When I googled scrollsaw I was sent to the Scrollsaw Woodworking and Crafts website and to Steve's.  I watched practically all of Steve's videos and eventually bought a Dewalt.  I took a course at my local Woodcraft Store and have been hooked ever since.  I make a lot of toys and things for my twin grandsons (age 2).  I don't sell anything just make stuff to give away.  Although I have yet to retire it is cool to say I now have a hobby.

I use Lowe's for poplar, oak and thicker plywood.  Most everything else I buy from Sloan's Woodshop (their website is on Steve's site).  They are easy to talk to and work with.  It is nice to be able to talk to someone and not just click on a picture.  Great service and good prices.

Beautful work Mike.  Monticello is an amazing destination and if anyone gets a chance they should go.  Thank you for sharing.  I can't imagine the hours it must have taken.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: On/Off foot pedal
« on: April 22, 2010, 06:38:20 pm »
Janet - I got mine at Woodcraft for about twenty dollars.  The foot pedal will save your on/off switch on the machine from being replaced as often.  I like the control you have when cutting.  Also I put a cover (just clear tape) over my on/off switch to keep sawdust out.  I think the foot pedal is as close to a must as a good light source.

Marg - I hope my grandsons will want to learn.  I think with kids you just have to be excited about something and some will gravitate to it and some won't.  That is the fallacy about "quality time", you have to be available when they take an interest.  What a blessing it will be if your grandson takes up scrolling.  I love spending time with mine (2 year old twins) no matter what we are doing.

P.S. - They are two today!! April 22
