General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: A Message for "Newbies"!

Well said GB.  If only some of this info had been available when I started back in the 70's, it would have surely been much easier.

Sunshine all week for a change with highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's.

I know it is having an effect on the Bahamas as I heard from a customer and she couldn't send money as Western Union was closed due to weather.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Disc and Belt Sander Opinion
« on: September 26, 2010, 09:05:10 am »
I have both a 4 and 6" belt sander and seldom use the 4" as the belts last almost 3 times as long on the 6".  They will last even more if you use the belt cleaner sticks.  I'm not cheap just frugal.  Of course the palm and random orbit are necessary too.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Ornament wood
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:54:56 am »
I was in HD the other day and found some cedar fence boards in their reject box for 51 cents.  They had some damage but not much and after running them through the planer to 5/16", I now have some wood all ready for ornaments.

What a thoughtful gesture.  So much more meaningful than flowers.

The Coffee Shop / Let's put seniors in jail
« on: September 20, 2010, 05:34:07 pm »
Let's put the seniors in jail and the criminals in nursing homes.

This would correct two things in one motion:

Seniors would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.

They would receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs, etc.

They would receive money instead of having to pay it out.

They would have constant video managing, so they would be helped instantly if they fell or needed assistance.

Bedding would be washed twice a week and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.

A guard would check on them every 20 minutes. All meals and snacks would be brought to them

They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.

They would have access to a library, weight/fitness room, spiritual counseling,

a pool and education...and free admission to in-house concerts by nationally recognized entertainment artists.

Simple clothing - I.e.., shoes, slippers, pj's - and legal aid would be free, upon request.

There would be private, secure rooms provided for all with an outdoor exercise yard complete with gardens.

Each senior would have a P.C., T.V., phone and radio in their room at no cost.

They would receive daily phone calls..

There would be a board of directors to hear any complaints and the ACLU would fight for their rights and protection.

The guards would have a code of conduct to be strictly adhered to,

with attorneys available, at no charge to protect the seniors

and their families from abuse or neglect.

      As for the criminals:

      They would receive cold food.

They would be left alone and unsupervised.

They would receive showers once a week..

They would live in tiny rooms, for which they would have to pay $5,000 per month.

They would have no hope of ever getting out.

Thx Tinker.  As I don't speak metric, that chart will come in handy.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: walnut Stain
« on: September 18, 2010, 04:17:16 pm »
The stain will come from the hull.  After it turns black, it will stain you.  I found as a kid when I tried to get some walnuts to sell.  We lived on a gravel road and I put the walnuts on the road to let the traffic hull them then I would pick up the uncracked nuts.  I also picked up some dark stained hands in the process.

I have used fabric as it gives you a large variety of colors and styles.  It will fade over time though.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Anyone doing the mug?
« on: September 13, 2010, 10:05:41 am »
It sounds like an interesting project but I can't and get it finished in time.  Have some orders pending and my pulmonologist changed my medication last week and its not working so am rather light headed and short winded.  Don't think combining that with saws is the wisest move.

If you want to maintain it's antique value, avoid refinishing.  It could be cleaned with mineral spirits and a fine steel wool.  It was probably finished with lacquer.

I will try to respond but have a 3 yr old Weimariner trying to get on my lap.  I just adopted him today.
I normally finish my pieces with spray laquer and have used felt in a color that fits the piece and have also raided my Mother's sewing room for fabric to use.  I dab glue on the larger areas of the piece then stretch the fabric on.
