Computer questions / Re: New toolbar
« on: December 01, 2012, 08:57:14 pm »
Chuck, I think you have a problem.  It seems to be a hard to cleanup type of problem.  I did a Google search and didn't find anything from a recognized virus/trojan prevention site on how to remove it.  I did find forums that had links to sites that claim to remove the toolbar.  Reading further down the page there were warnings not to visit the sites referred to.

You might have some luck going to sites like Mcafee, AVG, Avast, Malwarebytes, Emsisoft, etc., etc. to see if they have any info on this particular malware.

Best of luck and let us know how it turns out.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Jim

Chuck, I did some checking. Malwarebytes has some information on your problem as does Norton (Symantec).  At MB I did a search for Snap.do and found someone had removed it using their instructions.  At Norton I did a search in Support.

Note that both sites say "Don't follow these instructions yourself, they are only for the person who requested help".  I take that to mean that you should open your own support request in the site so they can tailor the instructions to your problem.

Thanks, GB.  The pic was sent to my Canadian friends.  Didn't want to send it to someone in the US who didn't win, that would be cruel.

Pattern Requests. / Re: Text to pattern
« on: November 30, 2012, 08:44:42 pm »
OC, that's exactly what I wanted.  Thanks for your pattern.

While I was puttering around the house today, the answer came to me.  It's a simple as using Inkscape's Trace Bitmap before changing the interior colour to a light grey.  For some reason I always did the trace after.

Thanks to you and Judy for your help.

OC, I don't live in Kingston, I'm in Montreal but I do have a grand-niece by marriage who is in her first year.  I like your pattern but I'd like it something like Judy did, the letters outlined in a black line.  The small letters are very difficult to cut without a good line to follow.

Judy, your pattern was more what I was looking for in that the letters were lighter color and outlined with a sharp black line but I wanted the result to be the same as the image posted - it's taken from the University logo.  My idea was to cut the letters out so they were removed from the block, not the way you did it.

Thanks to both of you for your efforts, I really do appreciate them.  I can't get a sharp line to outline the letters - tried Gimp and Inkscape.

I've been trying to make a good cutting pattern from this image.  The final cutting is to be about 5" from the left of the "Q" to the right side of the "S".  I've tried every way I can think of to get nice sharp lines to follow - Gimp and Inkscape - but the lines are always fuzzy and grey, especially for the word "university".

I'd really appreciate it is someone could make a pattern for me.  Thanks.

Then I'd like some pointers on how to turn something like this image into a good pattern for cutting, so I can do the next one myself.

Thanks,
Jim

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: DC mod idea - does it make sense?
« on: November 27, 2012, 08:55:36 am »
dgman, your design would be great if I had more shop space. I was hoping to put the impeller above the drum to save floor space.  I also don't have much headroom above the DC so I was wondering what would be the minimum height for a separator?  Does your separator remove the fine dust from scroll sawing or does it pass through to the DC?

I should also check with Busy Bee to see if I could turn the impeller section by 90 degrees.  Maybe the bearings wouldn't take the different loading.

Keefie, that's what I was thinking of making.  Lately most of my dust/chips are from the scroll saw (very fine) or the planer (fairly large).  The scroll saw dust really plugs the DC bag.

Would a separator with 12" below the Thien separator plate be enough to collect chips and dust?  I would have to empty the separator regularly, especially with the planer working.

I'm trying to decide if a pre-separator is worth pursuing so I appreciate your comments.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / DC mod idea - does it make sense?
« on: November 25, 2012, 08:48:51 pm »
My dust collector http://www.busybeetools.com/products/DUST-COLLECTOR-1HP-570CFM-1-MIC-BAG-CSA.html has a 4" inlet. I'd like to put a Thein pre-separator in front of it.  Ideally I'd rotate the impeller so the inlet is down. This will let me directly connect the separator outlet to the DC inlet.

How big would I need to make the separator container to work with the 4" inlets and outlets? I guess I could scale up the top plate but I don't want to lift the impeller section any higher than necessary. What would the minimum height for the can, or the minimum height below the baffle?

I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on this?

The Coffee Shop / Re: HF 12 inch disc sander
« on: November 18, 2012, 09:41:08 pm »
Dean, I don't have a disk sander (but am thinking of trying to make one).  The HF web site also mentions the full load amps is 11.9, which would run easily on a 15 amp circuit.

Motors can pull double the running current while starting, in this it is case 22.7 amps.  I doubt you will have any problems starting the sander on a 15 amp circuit.

Good luck with it.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Dust collector problem
« on: November 12, 2012, 06:22:52 pm »
My dust collector does collect at least some fine dust because the bag plugs, that's what started the thread.  It seems the problem with the scroll saw is that is makes mostly very fine dust.  The DC does collect some of the fine dust, that's why it plugs and forces dust from around the seal of the bottom bag.  Is it 5%, 50%, or 95% efficient is another question.  Even with a 1 micron bag, I suspect it's efficiency for fine dust is on the low side.  Chips and table saw dust don't plug the filter bag the way the scroll saw dust seems to.

I'm wondering if a cyclone before the dust collector would remove most of the fine dust.  My DC is a Busy Bee Craftex, 1hp with a 4" inlet.  Does anyone have any experience that would tell me it would be worth the effort to build a cyclone?  Can't afford a commercial one, at least for a while.

Thanks for your comments.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Spray Fumes
« on: October 20, 2012, 08:59:20 pm »
I'm in Montreal and can't spray outside in the winter so I cut a 1/4" thick board to fit into the garage window.  A small squirrel cage fan fitted into a cardboard box works as a spray booth, much like jrpeteo.  The inlet of the fan has a filter over it to collect over-spray.  A plastic dryer hose vents out through a hole in the board so I can spray in the middle of winter.

It works quite well but there is still a small amount of smell so I don't stay in the garage after spraying.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Old China Number Two....Duh! LOL
« on: October 13, 2012, 03:46:36 pm »
Danny,  Noritake is good quality so I wouldn't send it to Goodwill.  Havning said that, you will not be a millionaire, unless you are one now.   ;)

A quick search on Google http://www.ebay.com/itm/Noritake-Rosewood-5107-Vintage-China-c-1950s-44-Piece-Lot-Near-Mint-/250978705825shows a "near mint" condition 44 piece set at $250.

There are places that buy china and resell it, you might contact them, or try selling it on-line.

Good luck,

Computer questions / Re: Keychain maker - trojan???

Russ, I don't believe any of Steve's programs contain malware.  If anything, I would believe a false positive.  I will drop Steve a note and see if he has any thoughts.

Thanks,

Computer questions / Keychain maker - trojan???
« on: October 05, 2012, 10:20:26 pm »
Emisisoft anti-malware has identified Steve's scroll saw keychain maker (keychain.exe) as containing a trojan downloader.  I don't believe Steve's download contained a virus.  If the file is infected, it's more likely it became contaminated after I installed it on my PC  (Win XP, SP3).

Has anyone else had this program identified as containing malware?

Thanks for any thoughts you might have on this.
Jim
The scan is continuing and the program reports that setup.exe for the scroll saw pattern printer also contains a trojan.  Again, I don't believe it was in Steve's download but I quarantined the files.

Computer questions / Re: New Computer/Wireless Problems
« on: September 04, 2012, 07:04:17 am »
smitty, your router should be OK with Windows 7 (W7).  I don't have W7 but my XP computer finds the wireless network each time it starts, and asks if I want to join the network. Does your W7 computer ask if you want to join the network?

If it doesn't, did you try running the W7 wireless network setup?  You will need to know the security settings appropriate to your wireless router -  type of security being used, passwords, etc.

I don't think you need Linksys drivers for your W7 computer but someone else might have a better answer on this one.

Sorry I don't have more definitive suggestions but I hope this can get you started.
Jim
PS
Does your new computer actually have a wireless card installed?
