Hi Michigan scroller, sorry you are having problem contacting me. I will PM you my email address just to make sure you have the correct one. On the giveaway form you only need to fill in the name and email fields. The comment section is optional and can be left blank.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: adjusting a dewalt 788

As much as I like the DW788 it does make you wonder why they engineered the saw this way. They paid so much attention to details I wonder how they overlooked this need. It's been good for Jim Dandy I guess.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Dust Collection
« on: April 20, 2010, 11:00:10 pm »
Hi Russ sounds like you have a pretty good setup. My guess from what I hear from my readers is that it is a very small percentage of scrollers that have any dust collection specifically for their scroll saw. I know many of them are interested but just don't have many options. Maybe we will have some more good ideas here.

I think it was simply a money issue. There saws were popular but compared to the other woodworking equipment I'm sure they were a small part of their sales. Shame.

Hi RubiconScrolling, Good question and I don't have a good answer.  :D

The good news is that I am a one man show and can make all the decisions.
The bad news is that I am a one man show and can make all the decisions.

Everything I do is pretty casual. I work hard on the blog but if I get burned out I just take a day off.
I also have a couple guys lined up to help moderate the forum. That will be a big help.

Thanks for your concern.

« on: April 20, 2010, 10:11:47 pm »
That is a good idea. You may have noticed that if you click the link from the blog it opens the forum in a new window. I did that to make it easier to get back but I noticed that most are not coming to the forum from the blog. They have just bookmarked the forum. I will try to figure out the menu structure of the forum and see if I can add a link up there. I'll put that on my to-do list. Thanks

Hi frankorona, I'm not sure what species of wood you have available where you are. Pine is a good choice for some projects. I don't generally like to use MDF because the dust is full of chemicals that are not good to breath. Tell us what type of projects you are having problems with.

« on: April 20, 2010, 09:53:06 pm »
Hi Nathan, most photo's you will find using google image search are copyrighted. I have in the past ask the photographer for permission. I have been turned down and received permission. It can sometimes be difficult to find the owner because so many of the images on the web are being used without permission already. You want to make sure that whomever you ask is the actual owner.

Hey Charlie, I see you found an answer. To be honest I'm still learning all the forum setting and what they do myself.

Hi Chase, I don't think it needs a label. Just call it art. I personally like abstract art so I am drawn to this type of work. Abstract art tends to be a love it/hate it kind of thing. What I like to see are scrollers using the tool to produce something that does not fit the stereo type of traditional fretwork. I like fretwork but for the hobby to grow and be more widely accepted as an artistic expression we need fresh blood producing fresh ideas.

Here is a cool google trick. Type 3/4 inch to mm. Google will return the conversion as the first result. Works both ways with most units of measure.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Beginner blades
« on: April 20, 2010, 02:15:43 am »
Hi ripchief, Fine job explaining what can be a very confusing situation for new scrollers. Your thoughts were extremely well laid out and insightful. Thanks for taking the time to help out. This kind of information is invaluable. It's easy to tell someone to buy brand X and to be honest that's what they usually want to hear. Actually taking the time to invest in and experiment with different brands and types of blades can be more than the newbie can deal with. That experimental stage usually comes later after they are comfortable and get curious. I will usually just recommend a brand and a selection of blades to new scrollers. Let them get comfortable with their saw then show them what else is available. It is the easier path but I have new scrollers write me everyday that would never get started with out a specific recommendation. Most of them have either used the blades that came with their saw or bought a pack from lowes or home depot. Anything will be a step up from there. :)
