General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Magazines
« on: October 28, 2010, 09:31:39 am »
I have 16 yrs worth of magazines and find I seldom use them.  If I make a copy of the pattern and put it in my binders, then sometimes I can find it.  I have binders with patterns divided by category.

Those look great.  I've not had any luck getting people to use the ones I made.  They usually wind up on the wall.

These are part of the ornaments from Steve's pattern.  They are cut from cedar fence board that I found in the cull box at Home Depot and then planed down.  Managed 16 ornaments for a material cost of 51 cents.

I'll stick with my Hawk.  American made and the company provides great service.

I remember all of those.  Our 5 cent ice cream cone was a double dip.

Glenn Beck had been trying for weeks to get a military fly-over with fighter jets to start the event, but the White House blocked it saying it was "restricted airspace". The rally (Restoring Honor in America)  started at 10:00 am, but at precisely 9:59am, God gave us His fly-over that could not have been better. I get Goose bumps when I watch this.

Welcome from another Missourian.  I know GB hails from the St. Louis area and I am in south central.

Unusual to see colored slides from this period.  I have a video tape from the same period that was made from 8 mm home movies by a cousin.  It has no sound but I treasure it as most of the people on the tape are deceased.  Me excluded of course.

Nice turnings but how do you tell the difference between she-oak and he-oak? ::)

You are liable to get a lot of different opinions as everyone has their own idea.
I use different hard woods primarily oak, maple and walnut.  I prefer mine about 5/8" thick.  I would think they would need to be at least 1/2" but could be thicker.
I also finish mine with mineral oil.  I soak the trivet then let it drip dry, wipe off any excess and after it dries buff it with a brown paper bag.

How about taking a regular cane and cutting out a section below the handle and inserting a rectangular piece with scrollwork in place of the cut out section with glue and pegs.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: I'm thinking about getting a router
« on: October 01, 2010, 10:39:35 am »
Rather than a router table, I have my routers set up in a cube that is about 15" square.  They are inexpensive and I have multiple routers set so I don't have to change bits or reset the router.  I currently have ogee, roundover, 2 sizes rabbeting, and a 3/4" straight for cutting mortises.  I rarely use any other bits but do have a free standing plunge router when needed.
