You've got it Bill all sand paper does is scratch the wood and the finer you go the less scratches you see, using a random orbital sander helps hide the scratch marks and I have used this method on large platters I have turned on the lathe

You can wet and dry with oil as well it oils as well as sands, and the paper lasts a long time its a bit messy though

I put this post up in June 2010 and it did not get much of a response but it is a very important part or all woodworking and can make or break a nice piece that you may have spent many hours making, when scrolling I do all the heavy sanding on a bench belt sander  and generally finish with 180 or 240 grit if I use wiping varnish I sand in
between coats with 380 grit to get a really smooth finish, more comments welcome
