General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: I tried.... I failed ...sanding mop
« on: August 08, 2013, 07:58:34 pm »
I made a sanding mop and found that it does no more than smooth out the wood a very little.  It does not change the profile , or shape, enough to notice.  It worked, but it sits in the corner gathering dust instead of making it.

I also have a Hegner, in fact two of them.  I also ask "Why not a Hegner?" Do a search in any of the scroll saw forums for problems with DeWalts, Excalibers, and Hegners.  Should be enlightening

I agree with those saying that you may be pushing too hard on the wood while cutting.  I have found that the heavy duty blades from Flying Dutchman are no better than their #5 Polar blades are.  They last no longer than their other blades, in my experience.  I like FD #7 Polar blades to cut thick wood.  Cutting through glue will dull the blade quickly also.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Need advice on a sander
« on: July 12, 2013, 07:16:07 pm »
The most used tool in my shop is my 6"x48" Harbor Freight stationary belt sander with a 9" disk.  I did not even install the disk.  I find that disk sanders burn the wood too easy. This sander costs less than $200.  Hooking up my dust collection system to this tool was kinda' tricky but it does work well now.

Hegner is made in Germany and is about the best saw out there but is expensive.

In my opinion:   dgman has it right.  Set the price at what you would be willing to spend on the item.  Some of us take days to make the same thing others do in hours.  If you figure in your labor you will not sell much at all.  I do 25 shows a year and sell a lot but my reason to sell my stuff  is so that I do not have to throw it away.  If I needed to  make money I would go get a job. <ugh>  I went to my banker and they set me up with a  wireless credit card machine.  It increased my sales by 50%- 100%.I do not take checks. Lost about $300 to learn to not do that.  I do take custom orders but I am not fond of them.  They make you do things you may not want to do and it puts a dead line on delivery.  It feels too much like a job <ugh>

I use a hand held black and decker rotary tool (Dremel type tool) with a small bit and it works well for me.  I use it for starting holes in doing double bevel inlay and have the tool hanging from a hook I installed on the side of my saw base.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How will this affect those of us who sale a few projects via the internet or purchase some of our supplies online? Our hobby will become more expensive and may drive the small business man out of the market. Some of us who do this for fun and charge just enough to cover our cost will no longer enjoy our hobby due to the federal government who cannot control their spending problem. ........... It is amazing that those that dislike Walmart are taking their side on this issue.  The fact that  now ,one can buy on line with no sales tax, has hurt the small brick and mortar retail stores by giving buyers as much as 8%-9% less to pay for a like item by buying on line.  I think this is a long overdue change and will help small "Mom & Pop" retailers to compete with internet sales.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: I've had enough
« on: April 19, 2013, 06:13:52 pm »
I had a Harbor Freight scroll saw and it lasted a very short time.  I bought a DeWalt it lasted a little longer (20 months).  I tired of fixing it so I bought a Hegner.  Still have it five years later and it runs fine.  I also bought a used (1986) Hegner and it is my main saw.  I found a 15" Jet on Craig's list, (1988) for $15 and I put $50 of upgrades into it and it works well. If you are doing just fretwork and seldom cut over 1/2" material a DeWalt should work OK but it is not heavy duty like the three I have are.  A friend of mine has had a DeWalt about 6-7 years and has replaced the motor four times @ $400 a pop. Now it is in the shop yet again and I have loaned him my Jet saw and he loves it. He likes it because he can adjust the tension on the blade much higher than he could on  the DeWalt so it cuts thick material (2x4's) much straighter.  He is looking at a new Porter Cable at Lowes as a possible replacement.  Many swear by DeWalt but I do not know how much they use theirs nor how thick material they are cutting.  My friend and I both cut on our saw on average four hours a day seven days a week and never as thin as 1/2".

To give you an idea of a price to ask.  I bought a 1986 Hegner 25" scroll saw, single speed , no front quick tension release, no stand and I paid $600 for it over a year ago.

Yes  I buy rough cedar a pick up load at a time every nine months or so.  360 gallons of sawdust  is a low estimate.

I also toss out a lot of cedar sawdust. About a 30 gallon bag a month 12 months a year. I had a guy that took it to compost but he has lost interest I guess.

I cut out lettering and also inlay it and I just find a font I like in "word" and put a double underline with straight edge and pencil to connect the letters to each other.

I do the veterans discount at Lowes.  Home depot does not always allow it around here.

Brag Forum / Bellows
« on: April 04, 2013, 05:35:54 pm »
I made this fully functioning fireplace bellows for a friend to use in his fishing cabin.  It is made of  eastern red cedar  and soft maple inlay with leather and a brass nozzle. 18" long 6" wide. I have made fifty bellows over the past 30 years but this is the first one I did an inlay in. (Will not be my last)
