This was the 1st pattern I've done that came out ok, this stuff isn't easy, makes me wonder how Grampa and the others do them so quickly and good. I've gained a lot of respect for the pattern makers at this site after doing this one.

Grandpa, I made the file size bigger and sharpened it. Will that help you?

Hey Clive, along with different wood, you might want to check that your blade is all the way seated in the bottom clamp also. I had a similar problem until I realized that the non-cutting part of the blade was coming up through the table  and into the wood, which means the blade is not cutting at that point but just pushing on the wood on the upstroke. Now ever time I change a blade, I make sure that the arm is in full upstroke and that only teeth come up through the table, before I tighten the bottom clamp. This does seem to be a bigger problem with the reverse blades, at least it was for me. I also cut off about a 1/4" off the bottom of the blade with a pair of wire cutters to make sure the blade sits a little lower.

Extremely cool! I can just see the red or blue smoke coming out of it and making my 3 wishes. I must say though, I'm a bit stumped on how you made it. Great project!

Thanks Dan, I'll give it a try, a gallon of BLO isn't cheap so if I can make it last longer, I'm all over it!

Hey Dan, very nice saws, I have a question for you. I also use BLO and lacquer for finishing, I keep my BLO in a Tupperware container similar to Steve's and just dunk my projects in it, but I don't cut it with mineral spirits as you do. I'm wondering what is the advantage of cutting it with the ms and at what ratio do you cut it to? Also I'm a bit concerned that since I keep it in a container that sometimes stays open a while, that the ms will just evaporate. Could you please explain a little further about your use of the BLO/MS mix. Thanks

We have a bunch of spoiled squirrels in the back yard, that just love their peanuts. So that pattern was very appropriate for this household. I made it out of pine and some broken fence slats (I think the wood is cypress) that I had laying around.

Thanks Randy for starting this thread. I too have been having troubles with Gimp when it comes to portrait patterns, but thanks to the wonderful people here, I was led to the Scroll saw Village videos and they have helped a lot. Yes the guy is a bit wordy at times, but the info is more than worth putting up with a few unnecessary words. Thanks Katie for posting the link.

I've been trying to make this pattern in Gimp, but I guess I'm just not good enough yet. I was hoping maybe one of the experts here could give me a hand, this is for a dear friend of mine and I'd like to make this for her upcoming b-day.
