General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Hegner extras
« on: October 16, 2013, 09:35:45 am »
I have a 2008 Hegner and a 1986 Hegner. Both are single speed saws. On ther newer saw, the tension adjuster and tension release are combined at at the back of the saw.  The 1986 one had just a knob to turn at the back of the saw for tension adjustment and no quick tension release at all.  I ordered a new tension release part for the newer saw (Polymax) and installed it on the 1986 Multimax.  Works fine.  I also have a 1988 Jet scroll saw (15") and I put Hegner parts on it.  I use this Jet saw for doing Inlay work. I leave it set up at the 2.2 degree tilt required to do the inlays.  I paid $15 for the Jet just a coupla' years ago.  There is a lever/screw device available to replace the silver knob in the quick clamp that is a little easier to use.  It is sold by Mike along with his Flying Dutchman blades.  You might like that better than using the knob from Advanced Machinery.

I sell cedar and oak boxes some are flocked on the inside and others are not.  Most have inlayed images on the lids some have applied images. Different sizes and shapes  I just price them all the same.  Works well for me.

I had need of a repair part for my 1986 Hegner and got it today I ordered it about a week ago.  Up and running now for another 27 years or so.

I have two Hegners.  A 2008 model and a 1986 model and both are running fine. In my experience, the two things going for a Hegner are: They are durable, and they can almost be used with one hand.  Mine do not require me to hold down a lot on the wood to keep it on the table.  The DeWalt, I had, fell way short on both of these points. I do not know about other saws but I like my Hegners.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Concerning using the POLAR Blades. ? .

I use polar #5 for all my scroll saw work. I do not do fretwork.  I do compound cuts and inlays mostly.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Plaque Hanger.... ?

I use white wood glue to attach a 1/4" thick piece of wood (or thicker)  And attach my home made hangers with 1/4" wood screws.  I make hangers of old dead band saw blades with the saw teeth cut off.  Bend it with a pliers and drill some holes.  Another way I have hung thin wall hung items is to glue, in place, a thick enough piece of wood and make a horizontal key hole slot in it.
That saw blade idea is genius. Would that be considered recycling? :)
Recycling?  I guess it is.  I was looking for a use for old and dull/broken bandsaw blades and came up with this idea.  I sit down and use up the whole 105" blade and make 35 of them at a time.  I have also used 1/4" band saw blades in my scroll saw to cut soft stone with.  Made a dust mess  cutting it though.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Which wood for which project?

Many just do fretwork and plywood is good for that, I guess.  I do not do any fretwork myself so I do not use plywood.  I do a lot of inlay in box lids so I use 3/8" cedar with Maple inlayed into it.  Some, I do of oak with walnut linayed into it.  I also like compound cutting to make wooden flowers and mahogany works well for those.  I make toys of poplar, or fir 2x4's.  Any hardwood is good for cutting lettering.  I like mesquite for that.

Brag Forum / Fireplace bellows
« on: September 02, 2013, 12:14:32 pm »
Here is a photo of my latest fireplace bellows.  It is a functional bellows made of eastern red cedar with soft maple inlay.  The Nozzle is made of the brass of a 30-30 shell.  It is 15" long and 6" wide.  I started making these over 30 years ago and this is number 60.

I used to set up a scroll saw at shows , thinking it would draw interest to my booth. I was doing double bevel inlay and letter cutting. I found that 99% of the shoppers would just glance at what I was doing with the saw and just move on to look at my finished goods.  I no longer set it up at shows.

Resizing in other forums is automatic but when I post here I resize the images myself using a program called "Paint"
