Man! You are on a roll!! Keep up the cool work.
I'm impressed with the way you think. Not to mention the good wood working you do anyway.

Have you all noticed that...........

No matter how old you are, it is not as old as you thought it was when you were 18.  ;D

Nice job.
I have made the eyeglass holders in the past and everyone thought they were cool but, the addition of the little bowl makes yours extra COOL!

I have just recently made what I call "Men,s Valets". You know, a place on the night table to put wallets, keys, change etc at bed time. (Basically a "Junk Tray"  ;D )
I did not use a scroll saw, I just used the table saw and made them out of a cherry board that my brother gave me but, this might be an inspiration for others to make something similar using a scroll saw and incorporating some fancier cutting and decoration and even include the eyeglass holder like you did.
These measure about 6" x 11" x 2" high to give an idea of size to start with. The board had in inclusion on one edge and I re-sawed the 1" thick board down to 3/8" thick because I wanted to show the "live edge" on the trays.
Keep the new ideas coming!!!  ;)  :)

Have a HAPPY B'DAY!  8)
You've got me beat by seven years.  ;)

You know you'r getting old when the Government REQUIRES  that you start withdrawing money from your IRA account. Just found that out last month. They are going to get their taxes one way or another.  ::)

Ask Steve a question. / Re: mounting word art?
« on: May 29, 2014, 11:30:57 am »
I generally use glue to attach words to a base. If you have it sitting on a shelf or desk and it needs to be moved (to dust or something) it will be picked up by the "words" and the base will come with it and not be another thing that has to be picked up.
I would recommend any wood glue that you currently use. It is a good idea to make sure that it is a wood to wood bond with out any finish separating it. However, considering that it is basically a static item and won't be subjected to a lot of pressure, I suppose a bit of stain or penetrating oil wouldn't present much of a problem.

My problem is that I cannot cut a straight line but I am o/k on a circular cut "why" i.e. Letter i L n not to good but the bent pieces of P & D i find that I can keep to the line.

Bill Ellis

I've mentioned this before. It is far easier to cut (or draw) a curve than it is to cut (or draw) a straight line. Why you ask? Because your eye and mind knows what a straight line SHOULD look like but, your eye or mind is not quite sure what a curve should look like.  :-\
One of the things that I have learned about scrolling a straight line is to begin the line as close as you can to parallel with the blade. This may not be at a true 90 degrees as you look at the front of the saw. A practice cut will tell you if the blade is pulling more to the left or right and tell you how to plan your cut accordingly.  ;)
Also (and this just takes practice) slowly feed the wood into the front of the blade and using both hands guide it into the blade and CONCENTRATE your eyes on the line. If the blade starts to wander one way or the other, just easily and gradually steer it back to the line.
DON'T STOP CUTTING! Just go slow and continue to the end of the line.  :P
The line might not look straight to you (you know where the goofs are) but, when the project is completed  it will seem to have straightened up and darn few people will ever know that it isn't as straight as a string!  8)

Pattern Requests. / Re: dovetail joint
« on: May 27, 2014, 06:39:46 pm »
I've never tried dove tail joints with a scroll saw, it seems like a lot of trouble to me but, I have made finger joints on a scroll saw before. They add a lot of strength to the corners  of small boxes and do look similar to dove tails. And they do add interest to the looks of the box too.
If you do find a video or description of how it is done, I would be very interested in seeing it.

Dove tail joints on larger pieces done with hand tools or router is a whole different thing. I have done those and I still think that they are a lot more trouble to me than they are worth. ;)

GOOD JOB!!
I told you that you could do it.  ;)  Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something or tell you the "right" way to do something.
You can do anything you want to if you just try. And there is no right way to do anything. there just different ways of doing things.
I have had a few occasions that someone told me that "You can't do it that way." and I've responded with "Gosh! I wish you had told me that before I did it!"

Case in point...
"You can't make anything out of plywood look good." and "You can't make a vase with a scrollsaw."
Gee I wish I had known that before I made this.....

I must agree with Marg and Sheila. A "LIKE" or "Thumbs Up" button would be great. Just so I don't have to scroll down through a bunch of "Good job" or "Nice work" or "I like that" posts to see if anyone has anything constructive or additional to add to someones work.
I am a firm believer in constructive criticism and maybe someone elses take on a given project or question but, I refuse to just add a post just to say "Good job thanks for sharing".

Toy Makers / Re: Toy wheel sizes?
« on: May 17, 2014, 10:28:22 am »
It is just like the "LEAD PAINT" issue that comes up from time to time. Lead paint has been banned in the US for years now. I don't think you could find it or buy it if you wanted to. (Maybe if you special ordered it from China or something) Yet, people are constantly worried about having lead paint on toys and furniture. It has been proven that ANY finish on wood these days is "FOOD SAFE" once it has cured. If you want to be SURE of food safe finish on kitchen or cooking items that won't flake off into food just use mineral oil for a finish on wood.
By the way, I just read that plastic cutting boards harbor more germs than  a wooden end grain cutting board will. Of course the down side to that is, you can put a plastic board into the dishwasher and that is a big no-no for any wooden board.  :D
Rant over.... ;)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Hickory Wood
« on: May 17, 2014, 10:06:30 am »
I'm not sure these hammer handles are hickory wood or not but, I think you can cut ANY kind of wood on a scroll saw if you use the correct blade and just take your time.
Thickness of the wood does come into play and it may cost a few more blades but, I am not afraid to try anything twice.  ;)

Seeing that reminded me of something we use to do in our younger days.

Sitting at a red light next to an older person, I would nonchalantly slip the transmission into reverse and slowly start backing up. You never saw anything like an old man trying to stomp a break pedal into the floorboards to keep from "rolling" into the intersection!  ;D :D :D

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Resawing Wood
« on: May 11, 2014, 02:38:21 pm »
I'm not worried in the least. I think it is the smart thing to do in woodworking, keep expanding your knowledge and tool set forever!  ;)
I understand where you're going because that is exactly what I've done. You never know where the next tool or idea might lead you. I started with a scroll saw ten years ago and expanded to the point that I've built rocking chairs, dining room tables and a lot of other larger projects BUT, that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy working with the scroll saw also. In fact, I use it on the larger projects quite often.  :)
Note my avatar, OUTSIDE THE LINES. keep thinking about it.  ;) I never could color in a coloring book and stay inside the lines.  :D :D
