General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Grain direction selection
« on: September 11, 2013, 06:53:44 pm »
Most of my work has a backer so I only use grain direction to enhance the project, not for structural support. I usually do like Roger and run the grain in the direction of the longest side, but some projects look better with the grain running the short side.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Glass In Portrait Frames?
« on: September 11, 2013, 10:40:03 am »
I use glass because it keeps the dust out and gives the work a more finished look. I used matting material that is somewhat fade resistant. I'm sure it all fades over time, though. Since the plywood is behind glass I don't put a finish on it. Not sure if there is a reason to. Any thoughts on that?

Agree. Let the politicians fight the political wars and our boys can defend our country.

I also love the idea, but I'm not sure you will get many visitors, but I bet you could sell quite a few. How big is the can/ keg?

If you make pens, here's something that Jeff Powell wrote a tutorial for in one of the magazines. The leafs are various types of hardwood cut on the scroll saw. The blue is poly resin.

Thanks for the chuckle. Sometimes blondes make a lot of cents...25 of them this time.

Here's a pattern you might be able to adapt to your needs. I did cut this on the scroll saw to make sure everything looked proportional. I'd suggest for straighter lines and to make them faster, cut them on a table saw. I put the sizes on the pattern with the assumption that you use 1/4" stock. Make any adjustments for thinner wood.

Hope this helps.

If you make the roof removable, it makes a nice box. Add a chimney and you can market it as an incense box. Add a coin slot in the roof for a small bank. Lots of things you can do with it.

Danny, I made this one a few years ago. I had some cedar scrap I didn't want to burn. Nothing fancy, but I use it on my desk to hold spare memory cards. It's about 2-1/2" x 3" and 3-1/2" high. Sorry for the lousy pictures but I don't have my usual set up right now.

Ray, I make them 1.5" x 5.75". I get 14 blanks from one 12" x 12" sheet.
