General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Difference in saws

I agree with Danny;

I have two Hegners and a Jet and I have zero, major problems, with any of them.  The blade travel forward and aft is zero.  Two of them are from the late 80's and going strong.  I use only Flying Dutchman blades. (Polar #5)  My DeWalt lasted less than two years.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Craft Show a Success!

Great to hear you had a successful show.  Yes people still like affordable hand made items.  I have the same success as you had at about five shows a year.  Mostly in September through November.  Keeping the price down helps a lot.  $25 or less works best.  You must be making what folks want at a price they are willing to spend. Good going!

I have a 1988 Jet Scroll saw.  It is a 15" single speed saw, with an induction motor.  I cleaned it up and it is a very smooth running saw.   I do not see new ones offered for sale any more and I do not know where to get parts for it so I put Hegner blade clamps on it.

Very nice!  I have made and sold these in the past.  Kids love them.  Making yours a bit shorter would help to keep it easier to keep it upright for the littler ones.  For feet, I cut up tool box liners/pads from Harbor Freight. Enough to make hundreds of feet for $2. I like a natural finish so I did not paint them.  You sure have made a cute toy there!

In the past I have made and sold hundreds of wheeled toys and found that they sell well for $5 each.  Mass producing them and you can make 3-4 an hour depending on how complex they are.  Push toys and pull toys do sell well also and I sold them for $10-$15 each.  The only toys I now make are rubber band shooters which I sell for $5 each and can produce four per hour.  Only wish I could sell them that fast.

I agree with Danny:  I have had a  Harbor  Freight saw and a DeWalt and found both of them to not be durable.  Since 2008 I have two Hegners and a Jet.

True... you never know what will sell and how much.  I have done about 75 shows in the past few years and the worst show I did was total sales of $90 with a space rental of $25.  I usually get $250 of sales and as much as 8- 9 times that on about three shows a year.  My method is to mass produce a few items and sell them cheaply. ($20 and less)

This past Sat. I was a vendor at an indoor craft sale.  It was the first time for this event, was not advertized much, and had a total of 43 shoppers show up.  It only lasted form 8AM till noon.  $20 booth cost and I sold $275 worth of stuff and got a few custom orders.  I expected to sell about $60 worth so I was suprised!

Usually the only cracking problem I have with cedar is if the inlay is large , near the edge ,have a too tight fit and I tap it in place.  When this happens I just fill the crack with white glue and clamp it shut.  I use 3/8" thick wood.

One thing about pricing them all the same, you will find out quickly which folks prefer.  The price is not the deciding factor this way.

I prefer the Flying Dutchman Polar #5 blades for cuts like that. #7's will work also.  As has been said, high tension and very slow feed rate.  The cut is so smooth with a scroll saw (when compared to a band saw) that no sanding is required so I as I cut this, slowly, I remember that I am cutting and avoiding sanding at the same time.
