General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Spiral Blade Troubles

If the knobs are hard to turn, Steve has a patten for wood "overlays" to make tightening easier.  http://stevedgo.ipower.com/cat/?page_id=170  The pattern mentions the EX21 and DW788 but it could be used for any saw.  It would also mean you wouldn't have to adjust the set screw so the knob was vertical.

Do check the underside of the table to make sure the wood knob doesn't hit the table.

The Mythbuster did the "bull in a china shop" test and, as I recall, the bull didn't do any damage.    ;D

Computer questions / Re: phising and spam
« on: May 27, 2013, 06:40:59 pm »
Judy, not sure if this is pertinent or not.  Sunday am, if I remember correctly, I went onto Steve's web site and found an odd link in the daily posting.  I followed it and it was totally not related to anything Steve might link to.  Unfortunately I can't recall the verbiage on Steve's site and can't recall what the link lead to.

I went back to Steve's site in the afternoon and the link was gone.  From this, I suspect Steve was hacked and that he removed the bad link as soon as he was aware of it.

Whether or not the bad link is related to your problem or not, I can't say.  It does seem you are the only one reporting spam/fishing apparently coming from Steve.

Good luck figuring it out.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / DW788 tear-down
« on: May 25, 2013, 09:48:01 am »
In case anyone missed it, Steve's May 24 post had a link to a video on taking a DW788 apart.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7EWpq3aQeU&feature=youtu.be  It doesn't show putting it back together so pay attention if you take it apart.    ;D ;D

The Delta 40-690 is identical to the 788 and I believe the 40-695 is essentially identical to the 788 so there is good info for us Delta owners as well.  There was a good segment on greasing the many (I think 30 was mentioned) needle bearings in the saw.

It's about an hour but is worth watching.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: DeWalt planer
« on: May 18, 2013, 08:57:40 pm »
King, I've set the outboard ends (farthest from the knives) of the infeed and outfeed tables to be a bit higher then the table under the knives.  That reduces snipe.

As the wood enters the planer, I slightly lift the back end of the board and do the same to the front end as it leaves the planer.  That, and setting the final cuts to barely remove any material  eliminates snipe.  Perhaps one day I'll try a long melamine board as a bed to see how it works to eliminate snipe.

Thanks for your comments.

I wonder what it would cost if one our American members bought the knife and sent it through the mail?  It might be as simple as sticking a new mailing label, and postage, on the original wrapping.  Or it might get customs, duties, etc. involved.

Google is your friend.  I put in "dewalt dw733 owners manual" and the first result was a PDF of the 733 manual.  With my 734, my main problem was reducing snipe at the ends of the board - Google helped.

Enjoy your planer and be sure to wear hearing protection.

Charles, let me try to look at your question in a different way.

From what I see, most patterns sell in the $10 range, but these patterns are not for re-sale by the purchaser.  Selling the rights, so the buyer can resell, modify, or even not sell the pattern, at 10 to 20 times the one time price doesn't seem to be way out of line.

If you sold a pattern for $100 and the buyer then sold it for $10, he would have to sell 20, or more, patterns to make a profit.  (He also has expenses to cover.)

Not sure if this helps you but it is a different approach than other comments so I hope it helps you set your price.

Best of luck,
Jim

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: D788 wobble
« on: May 13, 2013, 09:21:13 am »
If by wobble, you mean a front to back movement of the blade as it moves up and down, some movement is built into the mechanism and I don't think it can ever be completely removed.  In come cases it can be reduced.

Raising the rear of the table has helped some and has been discussed on this site.  Here is one reference http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=12146.0

Rick's scroll saw site http://www.scrollsaws.com/ has some ideas as well. On the left menu, click on "Dewalt Tuneup".

I raised the rear of my table and moved the lower rocker mount towards the front of the saw and reduced the movement of the blade to about 1/32".

It's a bit of trial and error but it can be done.  When working on moving the lower rocker mount, be careful not to strip the screws that go into the rocker arm.  It's easy to strip the threads in the aluminum (personal experience  >:( >:( ) - then you will need a new rocker arm.

Let us know your results.

Computer questions / Re: Gimp questions
« on: May 12, 2013, 10:16:34 am »
I'm just a beginner in Gimp but here goes.  (I may be way off in my suggestions but if so, I hope someone who knows more about Gimp will correct me.)

Question 1)  Are you saving the file as a JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or in the native Gimp format?  Most formats will not save layers but the native Gimp format (.xcf, I think) will save the separate layers.  When you are finished with your pattern, you can delete any layers you don't need.

Question 3)  You can used the paint bucket to fill areas with red, or any colour you want.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Interesting comparisons.  The one I can't see is the bottled water, tap water has always been good enough for me.
