Intarsia / Something different
« on: January 24, 2014, 02:41:48 pm »
Using a pattern by H. Corbeil, that I modified, I came up with this rendition.  its 9.5 inches tall, and made with Aromatic Cedar, Cherry, Walnut, Oak, and Poplar

Your choice of woods, shaping, and talent really stand out on this deceptively difficult piece.  I love what you did with it!   Sincerely honored that you chose one of my designs to do......Linda David.

Linda,  I thank you...for the wonderful design.  Without pattern makers such as yourself, willing to sell, or share these patterns, I would not be able to make the pieces that I make.  This is a hobby I truly enjoy, but I know that I could never draw well enough to make such realistic patterns.

I am extremely pleased that as the original artist, you like what I have done with your hard work.  To get words of encouragement from the fantastic people on these forums, is great.  To get those words from the artist themselves, is extraordinary.

Hats off, to all the pattern makers.

I am also a basement scroller.  I have a small room (10x7) that I have benable to seal off from the rest of the basement.  I use a shopvac when sanding, and I clean daily.  I plan to get a dust collection system in the near future.  Dust has not been a problem outside of the shop room.

Made a couple welcome signs from patterns by Steve Good.  Now I just have to decide which one to give wifes daughter to put in her new home.

Intarsia / Cockatoos

This pattern was found in the November 2013 issue of Creative Woodworks and Crafts.  It is by Linda David, and contains 170+ pieces.  Wad definitely a challenge and somewhat intimidating as I have never before attempted an Intarsia with so many tiny pieces.  Its not all that large at approximately 12 x 10 inches, but definitely not for a beginner.

I used Poplar, Aspen, Walnut, yellowheart, Paduck, and the backing is a slab of Pine, that I stained with Minwax Golden Oak Stain.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Using "Painters Tape" --OR NOT-- :+}
« on: December 27, 2013, 11:50:04 am »
I found that the least expensive way for me to go is buying rolls of contact paper.  I apply the contact paper to the entire piece of wood when I first buy the lumber, and then print whatever pattern I need on regular inexpensive printer paper.  Spray on adhesive, and then packing tape.  Removal is simply lift the corner, and remove the entire piece.  NO residue, ever.  I buy the 18 inch roll of clear contact paper, and cut as needed.  I do mostly Intarsia, and since I  cut pieces of the pattern apart to apply to different woods,I have found this to be the most economical, and easiest method for what I do.  I have used it for fretwork, and I get the same result, quick and easy removal, with no residue.

BEAUTIFUL....I like EVERYTHING about them.  Great cutting and assembling.  Bet you spent hours on sanding them.  Danny  :+}

Thanks all for the nice comments.
Believe it or not,  the sanding for both bowls took less than an hour. I love my flexible drum sander and my sanding mop.  I think I have under 2 man hours into both bowls together.  And that includes finishing.  I don't count drying time.
