General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Just got back...
« on: September 04, 2012, 08:06:44 pm »
Welcome back Donna.  I used to live in Tennessee and I found the folks there to be quite friendly.  I think when I retire I will be thinking of actually retiring  in that area of the country probably somewhere near Nashville.

DW

DW, loved Nashville. If I ever get back I'm flying in (we had our RV) and staying downtown.  What a great place, we had a blast!  And you're right the people were very friendly all thru the state.

Hi all.  A little off topic but I just wanted to say that we just got back from vacation to Tennessee and we had a great time.  For the Nascar fans we went to the Bristol race....it was our first live race.  Hubby was in heaven!  What I really wanted to let you know is that we went to Sloans Workshop....since they don't ship to Canada, Canada went to them. The store is located on a back country road and isn't that big but we were there quite a while....the owners are sooo friendly.  Well worth the drive and certainly glad I went.  :)

Stupid question but why do you use a sanding mop?  I just use regular sanders or hand sand. ???

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: EX 21 - broken
« on: July 13, 2012, 07:40:01 am »
Well I've gotten word that they are going to repair my saw....here we are 2 weeks and still not done.  The part was to be in this week and now another company is to do the repair.  Hopefully it will go in to the shop next week.  In the meantime I'm still using the DeWalt.  It sounds awful...like I'm going thru a 2" board instead of 1/2".  I don't know what the problem is but until the EX is repaired it's getting the job done.

Sheila/Dan regarding your replies on blade slippage, I do sand the blade ends now....learned that trick quite early in the game! ;D

Sheila when I get my saw back I'll read the adjusting tension article more thoroughly.  You may hear from me again! lol :)

General Scroll Saw Talk / EX 21 - broken
« on: June 29, 2012, 01:59:42 pm »
Yesterday I took the day off work so I could spend a full day scrolling and get lots done...everything was ready to go, patterns attached, holes drilled, things are going to happen today....did they ever.

At 7:20am I'm in the garage and what should have taken 10 min to cut (a simple ornament) was into 1/2 hr. (blades dulled fast, slipping, whatever it happened).  Moved on to other projects, some went good some not.  I sure wasn't getting as much done as I had hoped and at one point thought ' I should have went to work' - NOT!  Anyhow, put the last blade in and no tension - took off the cover of the arms and sure enough - mechanism broke.  Well nothing I can do right now, I'll call the dealer later as I have to keep cutting.  Hauled out ol' yeller and that sure didn't go good (if the blade didn't slip from the top it slipped from the bottom which was a new one to me), so after cutting 2 ornaments I called it a day - did my finish sanding and closed shop frustrated in that I didn't get as much done as I had hoped and also that my saw quit.  But at the same time I did get things done that I wouldn't have otherwise.

I remember reading in Sheila Landry's blog that she had had a saw problem and when I found the post sure enough same thing. As I was telling my husband what happened I got thinking maybe there was signs that things weren't right only didn't realize it at the time.  The tension needed to be adjusted a lot (which isn't normal), the white lever flipped open once and that has never happened before.  When that happened I just thought strange, put it back and kept going.

I sure am glad that Sheila posted about her "breakdown" as it gave me some info when I called the dealer.  He wanted to know how I knew as much as I did, thought I had already talked to General!  Thanks Sheila... :)

Now I wait to hear what they're going to do....

Thanks Dan.  Appreciate the feedback.  I normally order my clock inserts from Wooden Teddy Bear and find they are great to deal with and prices are good.  With your recommendation I'll get my order ready for the other must haves!  Love waiting for an order to arrive....can't wait to see the goodies!

bought anything from 'Klockit' or 'Wildwood Designs'?  I'm looking at the clocks, pen sets, music boxes....just wondering what the quality is like, service or anything else you can tell me about them.  From Canada I find it's a hassle to return anything so I want to get some feedback first.

Thanks all.

Hey Judy.  I use 2 sided tape - put a little strip on two sides of the board (on each layer) and keep stacking.  Sometimes the tape is in the waste area and sometimes not.  If it's not just be careful when separating....breakage can occur and has!  I stack 4 pieces of 1/8" this way.  If there is any breakage it's usually only 1 never all 4.  After the boards are stacked I apply pattern with adhesive spray and then clear packing tape on top and ready to go.

Now there are different thicknesses of 2 sided tape and the one I use is thinner than a piece of paper.  The thicker ones would leave a gap between the boards.

Works for me and quick and easy!   :)

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Summer Scrolling.... :+}

Here in eastern Canada (New Brunswick) our weather is getting to the 70 's and up (this week high 80's) but I'm not complaining....love the heat!  Our shop is set up in the garage so on nice days we get home from work and I go to the shop and it's comfortable and usually a slight breeze blowing in.  In the winter we have a wood stove for heat and on the real cold days it takes awhile to heat it up....the garage is 26' x 42' with 16' walls so it does take awhile.  We do get a lot of humidity so once that kicks in we'll shut the shop down for the summer.  I tried to keep it open last year a little longer but everything is sticky feeling and I was afraid the boards would warp once I cut them up so I gave in.  Hubby puts a protective coating on all the tools....come Sept. I'm back out there wiping them off itching to go again! ;D
