General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: what is a good wood for portraits?

Best quality baltic birch is from sloanswoodshop.com Both 1/8" or 1/4". I get the 12" x 24". Then you get 3 8x10 portrait pieces, and save the scrap for ornaments. Also, great pricing for Olson blades. Been dealing with them for over 5 years, and never had a complaint of quality, or service!

Brag Forum / Valentines Day project...

Tried to post a pic, but file is too large. Went to the tutorial on how-to at utube, but my sound won't work on utube. But anyhow, it's on my flicker site. Thanks for the pattern, Steve! Wife will love it!
I enlarged the pattern 15% so that I could use a 2" picture frame insert.

Cheap square is most likely in your wallet! Use a credit card as your square. I bought one from Sloans, and heard this tip (using a credit card)somewhat later after I bought one.

General Scroll Saw Talk / A use for graph paper...
« on: January 09, 2011, 01:21:59 pm »
Just google graph paper, and there's a few sites, free, to copy/print graph paper. If you need to make some straight or long cuts, make a copy. and it's much easier to follow a thin line than a pencil line. Straighter cuts!

I just measured the frt./rear movement on my Craftsman, and it's just shy of 1/8". Never caused any problem on my cuts. So, to me, the Dewalt will still be my next scrollsaw.

Sorry to hear of your experience! Thank you for posting it. I was thinking of ordering a Dewalt very soon. I really like doing intricate portrait patterns, and I would think that much front-to-back movement would ruin the cuts. Guess I'll just have to keep saving up.

Myself, I was not impressed with the quality of the bb from Woodcraft. I have never got a bad order from Sloans. Even if it's a couple of extra bucks, I'll stick with Sloans.

I do 2 or 3 shows a year. Just one day shows, and they are just Church shows. Pretty much pays for my scrolling hobby. Just 2 weeks ago, I went to a craft show that is one of the biggest in my area. I talked to a couple of people (crafters), and they said sales were really down the last two years at this show. They had also paid $135 for the 2 day show. Only one scroller there, and she also did turning. Excellant work, finish. She said she hadn't made the cost of her table yet. I was there late afternoon, 1st day.
My whole point is that the smaller Church type of shows have been much better for me. Only $25-30 or so for a table area. I usually do $230 average.
The average shopper does big-box stores, and the internet nowadays.
