General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Been thinking again
« on: March 18, 2012, 02:43:48 am »
I use bigger blades for outline cutting, such as the 30 rabbits I cut out of ?? softwood for my daughter?s class to paint up for Easter, it was quick and I only used 2 blades. With my inexperience, I find the bigger blades make it much easier to follow a line at speed. For finer work such as Steve?s ?? thick wobble bowl, I use a No1 or 3 and have to go pretty slowly and concentrate hard to avoid the pitfalls of starting the corners to soon or too late and generally have the assistance of the lamp magnifier as well

Bob. Kind and justified words for friends you have never met. The show sounds like a good platform for furthering the art of the S/S, and may add a few more members to the forum as well as being profitable for you so the very best of luck with it.

Marg. Thanks for your kind words, you and your husband are more than welcome, hope your Neuralgia is better now, I have been there and know how debilitating it can be. Just drop me a line when your plans are finalised.

Gabby. We on earth are glad old Pete refused you entrance to his site, but then it is understandable as we still need you on this one.  You don?t need a fancy S/S to make your mark here, just being Gabby is enough. Besides that, Obama needs your vote.  ;D  iggy

Thanks for the update Marion, Bill has been in touch, if only to remind me that I am a horse rustler and should be locked up. Isn?t that why we love him, his ability to insult without being offensive.

To add to your misery, when you have waited a year and done all that Dan has suggested, the timber will still not be fully dry and will shrink more once you get it inside, and then you will probably lose about ? the stock in converting it to useable material.

      Keith.
If you have a look at the user manual page 20, part nos. 48,49,50,51,52a and 55. They are clearly a means of adjusting the length of the top connecting rod. I guess this is the next course of action if twisting the motor round does not work. Why not ring Carl the workshop supervisor at Axminster on ext 2055 and ask him about it.      Ian.

Keith. Since mine came back from Axminster, it is pretty much perfect, I have not had a full day on it yet as I have been fitting the staircase I made for my mate this week but will have a good go this weekend. I am surprised they have not renewed yours yet as they told me they were going through their entire stock of 125 saws looking for problems.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Making sure the blade is square
« on: February 24, 2012, 07:03:31 pm »
Having satisfied yourself that the saw is running properly, and made adjustments as described by Glen you can then verify a couple more things as follows. Firstly, 1? thick hardwood is a pretty tall order for a puzzle cutting blade to handle, so the tension is pretty critical and so is the speed of cut so test them by elimination as follows.
1   Take a 1? square piece of the timber you are cutting, about 6? or 7? long, and cutting at your normal speed, cut straight across about ? an inch from one end, then using an accurate square, measure the angle of the cut you just made.
2      Do the same again only this time make a sharp left turn and measure the angle again
3   Then repeat with a sharp right angle cut and measure the angle of the cut again.
If all 3 cuts are square then you have cured the problem with your adjustments to the saw,
If the cuts are not square then try making the 3 cuts again at half your normal speed and see if there is an improvement. If not then crank up the tension a bit and try again firstly at normal speed and then at half speed. These tests should tell you what the best scenario is for your saw. If the problem still persists, you still have 4 options left.
1   Start again
2   Buy a new saw
3   Get some FD blades from Mike
4   Ring Seco
Hope this helps.
