General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: saw speed
« on: September 10, 2010, 01:23:23 am »
I usually cut at full speed.  With the right blade and as long as I am not cutting just one layer of 1/8-1/4" wood I can stay on the line with out trouble.  The only time I slow my saw down is when cutting the one layer of thin stuff or cutting corian.  I guess I have a feel for the wood and blade and know when to stop and go.  It all comes with time, and that is what is the greatest teacher.

Danny,

I know alot of the designers of fretwork patterns and even some portrait patterns use the thin lines to minimize the amount of 'drift' from a person.  Say you have a thick line, the size of a sharpie marker, and one that is thin.  On the bigger line you can sway to the left, right and down the center.  While you can say you never drifted off the line, you can tell it big time.  I love the new thin lines.  With less room to 'move' you get better and more accurate cut.  I'm not the best cutter and still drift from the line on occasion, but I think the thin lines helps aLOT.

I like it alot!  I love the natural edge.  Makes the piece feel more wild lifey(?) to me!

Sheila, Sheila, Sheila,

I can't believe you made it through all 12 of them without noticing that! LOL  Not saying I haven't done it before or anything!  Just tonight actually I was cutting out a frame designed by you that I installed the blade in wrong!  After cutting out the fret I could tell it was pulling to the left and not right so I checked and it was sure enough installed upside down! LOL

Thank you all so much!  I'm really glad you all like it as much as I do!  I have about 10 or more pieces of natural edged walnut that I need to use up!  I'm sure I will be making things from it for a few years now! This is what I love about the hobby.  You can really take one pattern change it, and make it your own. (in the sense of the project, not the pattern!). I have another project almost completed and will be showing it off as soon as I get it done! I actually made my first decent frame for it!  You would not believe how much 'pain' I've went thru trying to make a frame in the past!!!

Hi all,

First time I posted a picture here so I hope it works!  There is a story behind this.   I was cleaning up the basement, where my shop is at, and I came across this piece of wood at the bottom of the pile.  It was about 8 or 10 feet long and about 8" or so wide.  It had bark on the sides and is still rough sawn too.  I noticed at the end of the piece it had a oval with the bark all the way around it.  I don't know, but it reminded me of a hole in a tree trunk and I could just see a raccoon head sticking out of it.  I cut out the piece of wood from the  other and laid it aside for the time being so I could finish cleaning.  After I got done cleaning, I got the planner and made another mess! It was worth it though, as the piece got even more beautiful.  I came up stairs to see where I had saved my raccoon pattern.  It was a new design by Sheila Landry.  The link is here: http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/site/437434/product/SLDK129  If you notice the pattern is the full raccoon holding onto the tree.  I didn't think that would look right on the piece of wood so i just used the left half of the pattern.  I really like the way it turned out.  It is about two foot long and about 8 inches wide.  It is 1/2" thick.  There is so many ways to use patterns the way they are not intended.  I love making portraits but I tire of them all being cut in plywood and framed.  Use your imagination and the possibilities of just one pattern is amazing!  Please let me know what you think!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Cheese domes
« on: July 23, 2010, 12:44:00 pm »
Hey all,

I just wanted to pass on some info. I went looking for a cheaper source for the glass domes to use on the cheese plates.  I thought $8was a bit much. I found a place that sells them for $3.99 each!  It's Old Time Pottery.  They have a web site, but you can't buy products from it, so if you have one near you, it is worth it to drive there to buy some!

Hey all,

I was wondering if any of you might know where the cross pattern is from that is sitting on what appears to be the register table or something close to one of those kinds of table.  I have benign wondering ever since I seen the pictures from the picnic!

Thanks all
