Well the rain let up a bit, and I got to use that new foot switch yesterday. Made some practice cuts and you can't guess how much being able to shut the saw off immediately when you want to relieves the stress level. This may be one of the best ten bucks I've ever spent!  ;D ;D
I was able to work my way through a 90 degree turn without breaking the blade. By being able to start and stop without fumbling for the switch and keeping them on the work I was able to plan and execute my movements. Placing my hands where they needed to be and then just step down and continue cutting. I think this will help me learn faster. Now if the weather will just cooperate! Supposed to be some more coming in, but spring is just around the corner.
I went to the local lumber yard and dumpster dived their wood scrap, and got some stuff that looks to be oak from some crating, from 3/8" thick also approximately 1/2" and 3/4" or 1" and about 3" wide from about 12" to  3 feet long, haven't put a tape to it yet. Needless to say it was soaking wet, so I'll have to wait for it to dry before cutting. Best part is it was FREE!
I'll update once I have something to tell, I'm hopeing it won't be too long until I can put something in the brag thread.

Good response Howard, just don't let up on those last three, it doesn't look like it's going to get any easier. Being a parent isn't just having a kid, any idiot can do that! Love isn't giving them every thing they want. It's giving them everything they need.
This is the lesson our government needs to learn as well.

Gabby,

I snapped this one just for you.  I haven't done anything to the pieces yet, they're just the raw wood.

Note the bowl?  One of the 4 projects I haven't finished yet (I keep getting these blasted orders).

Chubby Bill

LMAO!
Your photo also answered my next question Steve has 2 patterns and you used the 3-d rather than the 2-d.
Are you into turning as well? I like the bowl. I'll have to post a couple photos of bowls I have turned.
The lathe is gathering dust, and will probably continue to do so. Gasoline is nearly at $4.00 here in CJ, no way I can afford to run a generator at those prices. The bookeeper just informed me that our power bill reached the century mark last month. Since 1998 our prices for heating oil and propane have gone from .99 per gal. to $3 and more. Our pensions have not kept pace.

you bet Gabby, I love the conversation and even if we get MAD at each other...you're all too far away to hit me! ;D ;D  I had a similar discussion the other day and the person I was talking to said it was a crime teachers got that pay for only 9 mo. work. I agreed, they should have to work 12 mos. and get a 25% pay increase!!

Hummm just think those kids could be in college and out before they were middle aged, and leading a productive life much earlier. Say 3 years! 12 X 3=36 months college grads by age 18 or so, they would also learn that life after school doesn't give them 3 months vacation every year to goof off and play.
Orriginally school terms were limited to 9 months so that the children could help with farm chores so mom and dad could get the planting and harvesting done. Now it's really no longer needed as very few of our population are farmers. I saw the percentage but don't recall the exact figures. Perhaps someone with more time on their hands than I have could furnish those figures.

Just remember folks this is the USA, where freedom of speach is guaranteed at least for a little while longer. Any of us have the right to comment or not, as long as they don't become abusive. Thankfully we are not forced to listen as yet. So we can decide to ignore anything said by others. Or join in, our choice.
If our discussion here clarifies something for someone else, I believe that is a good thing!
This venue (The Coffee Shop) was placed here for other subject matter than just scroll sawing.

My take on all the controversy is it's a matter of what you grew up with, much as language. We all know about different cultures being unable to make certain sounds. I personally can envision what an inch or a foot or fractions of them looks like with pretty close results. However I can't visualize metric measurements. I still have to pull out my tapemeasure  which has both scales in order to see what is being described.
It's a PITA=pain in the posterior,  ;D
for me!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: new motor needed
« on: March 05, 2011, 10:37:53 pm »
I could be wro  uh mistaken. LOL
But I think it would be a good idea to run it without a load (not cutting wood) for a while to allow the brushes to conform to the arc. As they shape they also allow more of the brush to make contact which will reduce electrical resistance and the motor should run cooler.
Just a thought, it might not be all that important, but that's what I would do. It sure wouldn't hurt.

Peaked at your photo at your website. You're definitely not ugly!
