Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Coin Cutting
« on: January 05, 2014, 12:35:45 pm »
One possible solution - clunky at best but it should work.

Print your pattern and measure the coin diameter on the print.  Compare that to the actual diameter and calculate the size you need to print at.  Most printing programs will let you scale the print.

Another thought - will your image editor let you scale the image before printing?  That might also give you the correct printed size.

Good luck,
Jim

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: can't get the blade in the hole
« on: December 22, 2013, 04:06:46 pm »
So the recommended bit is a little small.  And I thought it was me.   ;D

I drilled holes based on Mike's bit sizes, and had one heck of a time to get the blade into 3 layers of 1/8" Baltic Birch.  I then tried needle nose pliers to push the blade through the hole.  The worked very well, a pair of needle noses will now sit beside the saw.

I also noticed that once the end (where there are no teeth) was through the wood, it was easy to push the rest of the blade through the wood.

Ask Steve a question. / Re: Delta 40-695 lifter arm lock
« on: December 18, 2013, 08:49:11 am »
I have the Delta 40-690 which is similar to the 40-695 and use the Easy Lift http://www.jimdandy.com/products.html  I suspect it will work on the 40-695.

Bigfoot products http://www.bigfootproducts.ca/Lift-N-Lock.html also has an arm support that may fit your wife's needs.

Let us know if you find something that suits.

king, some front to back movement of the blade is normal with this type of saw.  You may be able to reduce the movement by using the suggestions on Rick's site http://www.scrollsaws.com/.  Scroll down to the "Dewalt tuneup" link on the left.  Your 695 is essentially the same as the Dewalt DW788 so the suggestions should work.

If you want to get further into your saw, the link here http://stevedgood.com/community/index.php?topic=13953.msg131708#msg131708 covers opening it up.

Good luck,
Jim

Lee valley has clock hands.  http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=32906&cat=1,42405.  The nuts are likely standard, you might find them in a hardware store or a store that sells clocks and mechanisms.

Good luck,
Jim

Clay, now that you explain it, it's obvious.   ;D  (We do need an emoticon for slapping one's forehead.)

Thanks,

It does look like very painstaking work.  You did a good job and I especially like the one on the left - that's thinking outside the box.

Thanks,

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: sawing 1/3/4 wood for chess pieces
« on: October 15, 2013, 06:43:07 pm »
When I find the cuts don't line up top to bottom, I have been pushing sideways on the work piece so the blade bends sideways.  Increasing the tension reduces the bending but doesn't eliminate it, especially for thick wood.

Toneman is correct, let the blade do the cutting. Every so often, I ease up on cutting and almost let go of the work piece.  If the piece moves sideways, I'm pushing sideways.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Pattern Requests. / Re: car or truck pattern
« on: October 08, 2013, 09:12:13 am »
Steve, our leader has some good automobile patterns here http://stevedgo.ipower.com/cat/?page_id=2257 and truck patterns here http://stevedgo.ipower.com/cat/?page_id=2270

All Steve's patterns are free for all to use.  He's a great resource for scrollers, beginners or otherwise.  On his blog page http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.ca/, there are links to patterns and to training videos.

Good luck,
Jim

Great pattern.  Perhaps I'm slow this morning but I don't see how you cut it.  Do you discard what it outside the outline or what?

Could you post a picture of one of the finished ornament?

Thanks,
Jim

Computer questions / Re: Computer Freezing
« on: September 26, 2013, 08:41:55 am »
edward, I'm not sure what you are referring to.  Do you mean the computer freezes when you run a certain program or do you mean a program that will stop your computer from downloading a bad program?  Or is it something else?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: How to "hang" door toppers?
« on: September 20, 2013, 07:47:29 am »
Two sided tape on the door frame is a good idea, never thought of it.  Lee Valley makes little round "dots" with glue on both sides http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=57802&cat=1,110 that work well.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Click -N-Lock

I tried to come up with my own home-made lift and couldn't think of anything simple enough so I bought the EZ lift for my 40-690.  I'm intrigued and impressed by the other arm supports, both commercial and home-made.  The EZ lift, the Click-n-Lock, and the Lifter show real innovation.

One thing to remember is that with most vacuums, the air sucked in with the dust passes through the filter and is then used to cool the motor.  Drywall dust is very fine and some will pass through the filter and can quickly ruin the motor.  Not saying not to do it but it's something to think of.

I have an old Sears shop vac that doesn't cool the motor with with the air sucked in with the dust.  It's very noisy but I don't worry about drywall dust.
