Hey Gabby, a suggestion. Home Depot sells melamine, it's a very hard and smooth surface, pretty cheap and you can wax it if necessary. You can build to suit your needs. It comes in various sizes and is 3/4" thick.

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?keyword=melamine&langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

BTW...I'm a sitter too!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Finishing Question...
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:59:32 pm »
Thanks Katie, that is what my gut feeling was, especially since it's an oil based stain. And coming from you, just solidifies my gut.

But I would still love to hear other opinions, this also raises the question, what if it was a water based stain? To me it seems like a water based stain would benefit from a little oil before a hard finish is applied, but thats just a thought.

Congrats David! on a successful first show, I am hoping for the same type of results if I ever do one! It's got to be a great ego boost to know that others actually appreciate the hard work, and the many hours devoted to producing a quality piece of work that others are willing to pay you for. Cash in hand is a wonderful reward.

A toast! "To many more successful shows"!

Again Congrats!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Finishing Question...
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:38:37 pm »
I normally don't stain my projects, but on this particular project I am using a dark stain, I usually just do a 50/50 mix of BLO and Mineral Spirits. So my question is... After staining, is it still necessary to do the Blo/MS step? I will be spraying with lacquer to finish off the project.

TIA

Bob

PS. It's an oil based stain.

I agree Dan, with this being a good seller, best of all it's really simple to make and won't take much time. Could probably knock a bunch of these out in a day or two.
