Hi Ed,

I use Gimp for the portrait pattern then Inkscape to add the letters and numbers. It just takes practice and a lot of time. These videos helped me out immensely....

It's a lot of info, but to me it was worth the effort.

Good luck with your pattern making.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Saw TABLE tops...let's review....

Different brand saw tables are made of different materials. Cast iron tables require more tlc than cast aluminum tables. My saw has a cast aluminum table and requires very little maintenance, I initially sanded and waxed it, since then all I have to do is wipe it with a rag once in a while.

Thanks Dan, considering I really didn't even know what a scroll saw was in March of this year, I'm happy with my progress. Thanks to you, Steve and all of the wonderful people on this site, the learning curve was extremely quick.

The pattern was cut on 1/8th" BB ply with UR-3 blade, Store bought frame (didn't have time to make one) Oiled with BLO and sprayed 3 times with semi gloss lacquer. Backer was a piece of black poster board. Gave it to the parents today, they were extremely happy with it.

Hey Ron good job, I've given her a couple tries myself and had a lot of difficulty with that pic. I'm glad you were able to get it done for him.

Bob, Steve did a thorough review of the Craftsman 16" saw to answer your exact question, here is the link:

http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2009_08_08_archive.html

Scroll down to find it.

If you are familiar with craigslist.com, there usually are several craftsman scrollsaws on there usually for around 60- 80 bucks, depending on where you live. Personally, I'd check Craigslist before I bought one new from Sears.

EK, that came out great, I tried it yesterday, I'm just not into frogs, couldn't get it right, just wasn't inspired I guess, so I gave up. Nice job.
