General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: How to tell if blade needs changing
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:35:24 pm »
Hey Jim, As a scroll saw instructor at Woodcraft in Ventura, Ca, I tell my students when the blade no longer does what you want it to do, It's time to change it. It could last for an hour of cutting, or it might last one minute.  there have been times when I have put a new blade in and it wont cut like I want it to. It gets pulled out and chucked.
When you have to push the wood and the blade starts deflecting, it's time to change it.
Let the blade do the cutting. Make sure your blade tension is tight. You want to hear a high ping when you pluck it, and use either blue painters tape on top of the wood, or clear packing tape on top off the pattern to help cut the friction of the blade. The blade will cut easier and last longer.

When you start to push to hard or when the wood starts to burn.  There are times when you get a bad blade or two.  I go with the olson blades.   I didn't have much luck with the FD blades that mike sent me.

General Scroll Saw Talk / DW788 Scroll saw
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:33:00 pm »
I have a problem with my scroll saw dewalt dw788 scroll saw.  When I run it and then left my foot off the foot switch it stops like right now it use to have a some play in it after stopping. To me it sounds like there something tight there times where I can't rock the blade up and down. and it also making a loud knocking sounds.  I had this scroll saw into acme tools two times and this time and they can't find anything wrong with it the last two times and I ask to speck with a supervisor and ask to see if there was soneone else to fix it other then that moron George at amce tools in fargo nd and the supervisor just call me today and told me that this other guy never repair a scroll saw so now I have to take it somewhere else to get it fix.  I don't use this scroll saw that much anymore. I want it fix so that I can sell the darn thing and get a new scroll saw the delta 60-695 model.  That dewalt scroll saw type 2 &*^^ me off from day 35 after getting it.  I'm glad that I got the ex-21 scroll saw that been working good.  But I hate changing the blade in the ex-21 scroll saw from a #3 to a number 5 blade.    That one other webiste you guys talk about really don't help me much. I hate taking power tools apart.    I know i'll be hearing from judy hunter in a day or so.     thanks for listening to my B***h about it.

I have a 40-690 Delta and it has a arm lift on it.  So it is no different than the Dewalt 788.

gene

on the 40-495

read this Upper arm lifts and locks in the raised position during blade changes or while adjusting blade position for fret work.

How is it different from the 40-690 other than the arm lift?

This one has a locking arm and On-tool blade storage area provides neat, organized protection for scroll saw blades.  and it cuts like a dream.

40-695  delta
20 in. Variable Speed Scroll Saw
Available April 2012

Electronic variable speed can be adjusted from 400-1,750 SPM for a wide array of cutting applications.
Unique dual parallel-link arm design reduces vibration and noise and keeps the blade perpendicular to the work surface which dramatically reduces over or under cutting, improving accuracy and quality.
Upper arm lifts and locks in the raised position during blade changes or while adjusting blade position for fret work.
On/Off switch, electronic variable speed dial, flexible dust blower and blade-tensioning lever are all conveniently located up front on the arm for easy accessibility.
Tool-free blade clamp allows for quick, easy blade changes in seconds.
Single lever, tool-free blade tensioning allows for quickly adjusting the blade to the proper tension which maximizes blade life and accuracy.
Large, cast-iron table provides excellent material support and bevels 0? - 45? left and right.
On-tool blade storage area provides neat, organized protection for scroll saw blades. ? Flexible work light illuminates the work surface for improved visibility.
Heavy duty, all-steel stand with adjustable rear leg has been redesigned to improve stability during operation and allows for safely adjusting the product angle to user preference for added comfort and improved ergonomics.

I have a EX21 since the beginning of this year.
I scroll a lot, that means at least 2 to 3 hours a day, every day.
And i never had problems.
My machine is also an european type, from axminster.
But i have a feeling that it is somthing like cars.
Some people drive a car more then 10 years without any problem, and others drive the same car just from home to the garage and back.

I bought a few machines from axminster, and never had any problem with them.

Maybe i'm just lucky....

I had a similar problem recently and it turned out that I had a small crack where the nozzle attached to the machine.  A little stupid glue and the problem was fixed!
Nick

I'll check to see if I have a small crack  not the one i'm sitting on you guys lol...
