General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Using "Painters Tape" --OR NOT-- :+}

Hi Danny. I too find the fine sawdust that accumulates at the blade a royal pain. Are the sheets a particular brand? Do you do any more that wipe the wood to prep it before applying the pattern? Cheers, Barry.

Lol, where ever did you get the inspiration for this? It's great! Cheers, Barry.

Hi Randy. Mind if I ask what size and type of blade you used? Cheers, Barry.

Just a newbie question. I hadn't seen any finished pieces in presentation form in the "Brag Forum". Suppose it all boils down to common sense and imagination, two character traits of which I'm in short supply. Cheers, Barry.

What's your preferred method for displaying your scrollwork? Do you hang it as is, do you make a frame, do you make a base so it stands up?  I appreciate a lot depends on what the piece is. Thank you, Barry.

mrsn, thank you, I would appreciate that. I've used spiral blades for some veining but don't really see using it for smaller fonts and still retain any artistic detail. Thank you, Barry.

Hi Gary. I tossed the Skil in the corner and bought a De Walt from Amazon. I've been using it about three hours a day since. It's a pleasure to use but blade changes were a challenge and the blower is terrible. I've been meaning to get a fish tank pump. If your considering an upgrade, and can justify the difference in cost to the wife get the Excalibur. From our earlier communications you seem pretty determined, and the Ex will push you to the limits of your abilities. If your considering turning your hobby into a business you'll be a step ahead in the end. Good luck, Barry.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: Enhancing veining

Thanks Jerry. It's just a general outline that kind of, sort of looks like a Harley... could be an Indian. Thanks, Spirithorse. It's one of Grampa's from "that other scroll saw site". Thanks Ray... a polymer clay is worth pusuing if for no other reason than to see how it works. Ordinarily I would avoid painting a project but the bike and backer are materials he gave me. I want to demonstrate my appreciation. Thanks again all.

I was cutting out a Harley for my last employer from some plywood he gave me with the intention of painting the bike  a gloss black and mounting it against a neutral backer. Half way through it occurred to me that as the bike is black the "veining" is probably going to disappear. His bike is black and I'm sure I'll get a funny look if I finish it in another color. Any suggestions? Thanks, Barry.

Thanks for the suggestion Gramps however I'm determined to master this new toy before I try something else. Actually, it was a toss up between scrolling and pyrography - scrolling won. I've considered a #1 but it's challenging enough trying to manipulate a #2 with these sausage like fingers, not to mention seeing it. I refuse to submit to old age...

General Scroll Saw Talk / Font size and type

Happy Saturday fellow scrollers. I've been working on a project for a good friend, and when I designed the pattern I used a size 18 font (arial) . I've had limited success in keeping the letters legible and am considering re-doing it with a larger font. Out of curiosity what is the smallest font, and type of font that you more experienced scrollers can use and are successful in maintaining legibility? (I'm using an Olsen #2 crown tooth). Thank  you, Barry.

Good afternoon fellow enthusiasts. I'm hunting for a fretwork pattern for the Masonic Lodge suitable for framing and presentation. I can't find one on this site, or Sheila's and would entertain any suggestions. Cheers, Barry.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Hardwood Flooring

Last year the flooring sub-contractor at one of our sites had to tear out two rooms of 3/4 in. maple flooring as the owner's wife decided she didn't like the color. I snagged as much as I could out of the dumpster, ripped the ridges off the bottom, planed off the topside, and ripped the remainder down to various thicknesses. I've used it in everything from picture frames, to scroll saw projects and re-built the mantel at home... just wish wife took exception to oak flooring that replaced it.
