Brag Forum / Inlay I finished this week
« on: May 09, 2014, 08:44:25 am »
The buyer ordered three of these.  His design and his idea to put the year on the front panel of this 11 x 8 box.  I may make some local school/collage logos on box lids with 2014 inlaid into the front panel like this.  I think it would made a nice graduation gift. Cedar box with maple and oak inlays.  These boxes are to be awarded to the officers of a Masonic lodge who served in 2013.

I would avoid lacquer and use Varithane or an epoxy.

Four inches and three inches, and six inches tall.  I make it in two pieces and then glue them together.  It is split down the center of the fish so each piece measures 6"x 4"x 1 1/2".  The curve of the fish side I cut on my band saw because it is too wide (4") for my scroll saw but I cut the cross out,(1 1/2") after that cu,t with my scroll saw.  The largest of these I can make, using just my scroll saw only, is 3" tall.

Welcome from Lubbock Texas.  Don't worry about using English.  I have been in west Texas for seven years and I  now understand "Texan" but still do not speak it.  <Grin>

I made these using my scroll saw and my band saw.  It is patterned after a local similar piece that is made of metal and about nine feet tall.  I have made a number of these using just my scroll saw that are three inches tall.  These are six inches tall and made of Mahogany.

Welcome from Lubbock Texas.  On my two trips to Europe ,backint eht 80's I liked Sweden the best.  I make my own thin wood using a band saw to re-saw one inch boards and a planer to smooth out the rough wood I start with.  I suggest you do a search to find out the many uses of a scroll saw.  I think many only do fretwork with their saw and there are many other uses for it.  Inlay, Intarsia, compound cutting, toy making, bowl making, segmentation, and sign making (lettering)...... to mention the ones I do myself.

What BIllthediver said:...................."The subject of bandsaw drift goes on and on, however if the saw is properly set up, there is no drift.".....This is true on my GO555 also.  I do a LOT of resawing. When I do get some drift I know the blade is dull and I replace it.

Radio controlled wooden model boats are often covered with an epoxy finishing rezin, called "Z-poxy" available at your local hobby shop.  I have made rubber band powered bathtub boats but put no finish on them.  No glue involved  (Screwed together) and made of pine.  The kids may paint them I guess.

I cut this from a piece of mahogany 1 3/4" x 1 1/2" x 3" using a flying Dutchman polar #5 blade.  Made the pattern my self.  I got the idea from a similar piece here in Lubbock that looks to be nine feet tall made of medal.
