The Coffee Shop / Re: McDonalds
« on: May 23, 2014, 08:30:25 pm »
The "facts" may be true but they are biased.  The woman who spilled the coffee in her lap got the coffee at a drive-thru.  She then put the cup between her legs and drove off - the video didn't mention her contribution to her injuries.  It is presented that McDonalds's is totally responsible.

By the way, I hate cool coffee.

Warning!  I tried PigsFly's idea and it worked.  I selected what looked like the old theme but, when I reopened the site, the Help/Search/Profile/ etc. were gone, only the Home and Gallery links were visible.  I couldn't find a way to go back to the default theme.

After a while I thought of moving the cursor along the band from Gallery towards Home and noticed the lower right corner of the page showed Profile - then I clicked and got to my profile.  Finally, I was able to get back to the default theme.

It appears some of the themes have problems so this might help someone else who has problems changing the theme.

Computer questions / Is it me or this site?
« on: May 14, 2014, 10:36:57 pm »
Over the past week or so, sometimes when I enter this site, it waits and waits and then it times out.  If it doesn't time out, it only loads the text, not the background colours.  If it's only the text, sometimes I am logged in, other times only as a guest.  When I exit and then go back to this site, it works normally.

I'm set to log on automatically.

Before supper today, it was very slow, had to try reloading a few times and then I got only text.  I could look at the threads but they were text only.

Hope I have explained the events clearly enough that someone can respond with suggestions.

Is anyone else having this problem?  Are there problems with the site?

Thanks,
Jim

The addresses are different so they normally would point to two different web sites.

Having said that, both addresses could both point to the same web site, much the way a buidling could have an entrance on the main street and another on a side street.

Hope this helps,

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Gluing fret work to backer
« on: May 08, 2014, 09:00:16 am »
I find that old scroll saw blades are great as glue applicators - always have lots on hand.  I can get a very small drop of glue on the end of a blade for exact placement.  Turned sideways, it also spreads the glue well.

daveo, I'm in Canada and use Dingaling https://www.dingaling.ca to make long distance calls.  For calls within North America it costs 1 cent/minute (1 Canadian dollar is equal to about 0.5 pounds). From here to Europe is in the 2 or 3 cent per minute range, I think.

At those rates, I don't mind being on hold for a while.

You may be able to open an account even though you are in the UK.  Ask them at https://www.dingaling.ca/about/contact/.  They also have a free trial (5 or 10 minutes - I forget which) that I'm sure would work from the UK.

Hope this works for you,
Jim

Billy,  is it a Woodruff key?  My recollection is that a Woodruff key is sort of a half moon shape and fits into a similarly shape slot in the shaft - you have to pull the shaft to get it out.  Is your key rectangular or square?  Some of those have a small set screw to hold them in place or they may be an interference fit.  In any case they shouldn't be able to fall out.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Thanks and good luck with it.

Gabby, most cutting boards are polyethylene (PE).  A quick search of eBay has lots of sizes and thicknesses.  Another source might be someone who still has the old manual drafting sheets - if I recall correctly, one side was rough to take the pencil but the other side was smooth.

US Plastics has thin high density PE (HDPE) http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.aspx?itemid=23869&catid=705 at a reasonable price.  24"x48"x1/16" for $10, plus shipping.

Home Depot lists some plastic sheets that might be suitable for your table.

Good luck.

The Coffee Shop / Women and lying
« on: February 21, 2014, 03:05:34 pm »
My wife told me this story.

One day, when a seamstress was sewing while sitting close to a river, her thimble fell into the river. When she cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, "My dear child, why are you crying?"

The seamstress replied that her thimble had fallen into the water and that she needed it to help her husband in making a living for their family.

The Lord dipped His hand into the water and pulled up a golden thimble set with pearls. "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked.

The seamstress replied, "No."

The Lord again dipped into the river. He held out a silver thimble ringed with sapphires "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked.

Again, the seamstress replied, "No."

The Lord reached down again and came up with a leather thimble. "Is this your thimble?" the Lord asked.

The seamstress replied, "Yes."

The Lord was pleased with the woman's honesty and gave her all three thimbles to keep, and the seamstress went home happy.

Some years later, the seamstress was walking with her husband along the riverbank, and her husband fell into the river and disappeared under the water. When she cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked her, "Why

are you crying?"

"Oh Lord, my husband has fallen into the river!"

The Lord went down into the water and came up with George Clooney.

"Is this your husband?" the Lord asked.

"Yes," cried the seamstress.

The Lord was furious. "You lied! That is an untruth!"

The seamstress replied, "Oh, forgive me, my Lord. It is a misunderstanding. You see, if I had said 'no' to George Clooney, you would have come up with Brad Pitt. Then if I said 'no' to him, you would have come up with my husband. Had I then said 'yes,' you would have given me all three.

"Lord, I'm not in the best of health and would not be able to take care of all three husbands, so THAT'S why I said 'yes' to George Clooney."

And so the Lord let her keep him.

The moral of this story is: Whenever a woman lies, it's for a good and honorable reason, and in the best interest of others.

That's our story, and we're sticking to it.

Barry, good point.  I have a fish tape the I use to pull/push wire through wall cavities.  I also find it is useful for digging roots out of a sewer pipe, not a good as a real "roto-rooter" but it works, especially on a holiday weekend when plumbers want double time.  (Don't blame them, they also need time off.)

I had thought to tie-wrap the scope to the fish and use the fish tape to push the camera along.

Thanks,
Jim

I know this is far from scroll sawing or even woodworking but here goes.  I've had some minor sewer blockages and have been able to clean them out myself.  I'd like to run a camera through the line to see what is happening but this means $$$.

A friend has ordered from this site http://dx.com/ and has been very satisfied with the orders.  I found this http://dx.com/p/ip67-waterproof-usb-2-0-cmos-6-led-snake-camera-endoscope-w-reflective-lens-black-10m-174942 and thought it might be cheaper in the long run - I could check any time I want.

Has anyone any experience with this sort of device - how well it illuminates, how the long cable actually works (USB max length is about 5 meters), etc., etc.

Thanks for any comments.

As you say, there are fixes for the blade movement but the noise is something else. I would be inclined to take it back to HD or to a service centre and get them to fix both problems.

Let us know what you do and how it turns out.

jcorrea, when you say "base" do you mean the table where the wood rests while cutting or are you talking about the feet where the saw sits on the stand or table?  If the "zero" is on the protractor below the table, there is an adjustment for the pointer to set it to zero when the table is perpendicular to the blade - it should be in the manual.

Hope this helps,
Jim
