Clive, I'd like to help but need some more info. What type of cancer research? Is it a single foundation that you want named? Do you want a ribbon or something different? Do you want a portrait to hang or a stand alone piece, or just little nic -nac's? The more info you provide the more likely one of us can get you what you want.

Bob

Torsten, Thanks for that link I love it.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Re: tear out
« on: August 06, 2011, 04:09:12 pm »
I just wanted to add about backer boards, it's important that they are flat to the back of the work piece. A warped or un-flat board will leave a gap between the work piece and the backer, that gap will allow for tear out as the bit passes through the gap. For the same reasons, you can't drill a smaller hole into a larger hole that has been made in the backer. Anytime the bit leaves the hole being drilled tear out will occur. I use a couple pieces of good, flat 3/4" plywood glued together as  backer and replace it once there is no more room for new holes.

Dan that's a great chart.

Hey Cathy, I know blood works as a die  ::), I bet the RIT would work well too. I've never heard of anybody using it, it will raise the grain, but all water based stains will, sounds to me like it's time to experiment!

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Spray Glue for patterens
« on: August 06, 2011, 01:11:42 am »
Hey Gene, a lot of us use the 3M brand Super 77 spray glue. It's easy to find at Home Depot , Lowes, Wallmart and many other places. I learned from DGman, from this site, to finish sand your wood before putting the pattern on it makes life a lot easier. When I apply the pattern I usually just spray the pattern and put it on the wood, I do a lot of portrait patterns with delicate pieces so once I'm done cutting I want to handle the pieces as little as possible until I get a backer on it and on portraits, since the wood is so thin a will not use tape, don't want to fight getting it off. When I do remove the pattern I keep a spray bottle full of mineral spirits handy then just give the pattern a good spraying, wait about 30 seconds then it peals right off. Any residue is wiped off with paper towels. After it dries a few minutes I will then give it a light sanding with 220 or 320 paper just to take off any little fuzzies that the saw might have left.

I never thought of that! I guess I never really considered paneling as wood before. Next time I see a pile of it somewhere I just might get out and take a look. Thanks for the idea.

Hey GB, I thought about that when I wrote it, but being it's from a movie that was made probably before I was born and it's a relatively commonly used phrase, and it's not an image, I figure it's probably safe from the watchful eyes of bored litigators.

It can be easily changed to something like "Clash of the Year" or anything else somebody more creative than me might think of, It was just the first thing that popped in my head. I also thought about, "Let's get ready to rumble" but those guys are very anal about their copyright so I decide against that one.

I'm open to any "Slogan" suggestions from anyone that might be more appropriate for the design, it's a very simple task to change it. I'll admit I didn't put a whole lot of time into this design. Thanks for looking out for us.

Hey Golfman, I wasn't exactly sure what you wanted in ways of a portrait or standalone pattern, so I went with a portrait style. I had to try to keep this as generic as possible, I know that these colleges have lawyers sitting around looking for copyright issues. So here's my attempt, hope it works for you, if not let me know and I'll try again.

Update, added Chachi's recommendation.

Tutorials, Techniques and Tips / Bloody wood
« on: August 03, 2011, 10:52:56 pm »
I was finish sanding by hand a piece of Maple, when I turned it over to do the other side, it was covered in my blood. I somehow nicked my finger with out knowing it, then the panic started. Trust me when I say, blood and maple don't mix, I tried wiping the blood off the maple with water and a towel only to smear it and make it worse. I then remembered that hydrogen peroxide takes blood out of clothes and was hoping it would work on wood also, so I ran into the house grabbed a bottle and poured it on the effected area's of the maple....worked like a charm! I did that a couple times and the maple is back to looking as pretty as it did before the near fatal accident. Then I got a band-aide for my finger. I thought I would pass this along since we all work with sharp things and stuff does happen, thankfully I was able to save the patient this time.
