If wax doesn't keep it from rusting, try Boeshield T-9.  It's a bit expensive, but really puts down a protective layer.

Sand it off with a belt sander.  They are cheap enough that if you burn them up after a few times it won't matter.  Otherwise it depends on what type of paint or finish got on them.  Use the solvent for the finish or oops for latex.

I do not claim to be a pro, but I have been at this since the Commodore 64 and a lot of people use me as their reference.  That being said, 2 antivirus programs is to much, and they may compete with each other.  Personally, if you are on Windows 8, I would cancel and remove both of them and install the free version of Microsoft Windows Defender.  It works great.  Updates regularly, and is totally free.  For my taste most commercial anti virus software is far too intrusive and takes up too many resources.

Free advise is always worth at least what you paid for it!

I believe that Dan Gallo, a former contributor and great asset to the forum, teaches at a Woodcraft in California.  I still hate it that Dan elected to leave us.  He is a great guy.

Easiest answer: sell both on Craigslist and buy the machine you really like.  No offense intended, but often it is better to leave the engineering up to the manufacturer rather than perform risky modifications on what you have.

Hey Gabby, do you have a router?  If you do there is a way to use it as a planer to reduce the thickness of a board.  It might just work for what you need.

Blade quality is very important.  I usually buy Carter brand blades.  If you don't have a woodcraft nearby you can buy them direct online or from Woodcraft online.  There are several good brands, but don't buy a cheap blade.

I run the pest control shop at MacDill AFB, and I always tell people that isn't a single mosquito on base.  They are all married with many children!
