Good job getting your album together.  That is some nice work!

I concur with all the answers.  Scrolling is a great hobby and having this website really adds to my enjoyment.  Julief you really nailed it about the errors.  They scream at you, but most folks don't notice them.  I have a piece I just finished and when I was putting the hanger on the back I split the wood. I was so frustrated I wanted to throw it.  It is quite small but seems large to me.  It is oak, which is strong but splits quite easily, so I should have known better.

I am not sure whether to give it as planned or do another.

I wear glasses and the fogging is quite annoying.  I finally got around to doing some much needed cleaning in my shop tonight.  When I dumped out the vaccuum (sp), cleaning out that air filter, made me realize how much I am breathing in.

Good info on the 'Dust Bee Gone" mask.  I will need to check those out.

Thanks for the responses.  I will go to the website and see what they have to offer.  Marcel, you can't miss the advertisments in Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts and in Creative Woodworks and Crafts.  They are always right in the first few pages.

I have paid to have folks, Sue Mey and Charlie Dearing particularly, to make patterns for me and they are always top quality.  The Pattern
requests page on this site is great and you can't beat the price  :)

I would like to start making my on patterns just for the satisfaction of doing something start to finish.  The "user friendly" part is good to hear Julief.  Do you think you would you buy Coyote now with what you know about the software?

Has anyone ever used the Coyote Stencil Shop software?  I see it advertised in SSW&C and was wondering if anyone new anything about it.

Or does anyone know of a good software for creating patterns?  Anything I use would have to be fairly simple as I am computer illiterate.

Thanks,
Barry

I saw one demonstrated at my local Woodcraft Store.  Amazing!  Very expensive but if you compare it to the possible loss of a finger(s), it seems more reasonable.  The demonstrator said that the same technology might soon be available on a band saw.

I can't afford one now but the good thing about technology is things tend to get cheaper the longer the technology is around.  God bless capitalism! :D

I must confess to always being a bit scared of my table saw.  I don't use it very often for that reason.  As someone said earlier, the best safety device is good tools used properly.

Money well spent, I wouldn't do with out a foot switch.  I also cover the switch on top of the machine with tape to keep out the dust.  It should last longer that way.

Hey Sam, you may want to scroll down in this Category, General Scroll Saw Talk, and see what Graybeard has to say under "Wood Source".

Hi Sam,

To answer your question it takes a while to learn about the different types of wood.  As you try different types you will see some cut easier, some stain better and some just look nicer.  You will discover your favorites.  You have already noticed how pine is easy to cut (because it is so soft) but it stains blotchy (sp?).  It is always available and cheap and great if you are going to paint your project.
A good hardwood to try is Poplar.  You can buy it at Lowe's or Home Depot, it is relatively inexpensive and stains well.  It cuts good and it is probably my favorite for all those reasons.
Keep your eyes open and you may find wood (cut-offs) at cabinet shops and yard sales. You can always buy wood online.  I use Sloans, the link is on Rick's website, and a lot of folks use Ocooch, also on Rick's site.  It is like anything else the better the wood the better your projects turn out (usually  :)).  Just start cutting and you will be surprised what all you will learn about wood.

PS - You will find wood is not cheap!!  :o

Everyone, regardless of age, seems to like those little drop clowns.  I make the heads larger than Steve's pattern and then paint a football helmet on the figure.  I use the school colors of different schools, paint on a jersey and usually the number "1".
I know this would not apply to kids, but with college football starting up in a month, they make nice gifts for fans.

Nice work on the puzzles.  I have always found that cutting any type of puzzle is great practice and makes me a better all around scroller.

Also the right tool (saw and blades for us scrollers) makes any job easier.

Thanks for sharing.
