General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Taking a cruise, need your ideas
« on: October 03, 2013, 09:30:07 am »
Pete,  The keychain idea may be your best bet.  How are your simple painting skills?  If you cut the iconic mickey symbol of 3 circles forming the face, or a skull and crossbones from Pirates of the Caribbean out of thin plywood, you could just paint Mickey black and use black & white on the skull.  Stack cutting a simple outline wouldn't take a lot of time.  Drill a hole in an appropriate location for the chain.  I may be wrong, but I don't believe you can get in trouble for something like that if it is just given as a gift and not exchanged for any value.

Just thinking out loud here, but I wonder if you couldn't purchase stickers or decals that could be adhered to a simple cutout to reduce painting time?

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Mortise Drill Bit

I tossed the sleeves that shim it to the various quill sizes, so it would only work for a Delta 17" or one with the same quill diameter.  I don't remember what that is.  I will have to look and see if I still have it in the shop.  You can buy mortise bits at most any woodworking shop, but you really need the rest of the fixture including a decent fence to make it worth using.  It is also worth mentioning that they are never sharp enough right out of the box.  If you use a mortiser or DP you need a simple cone shaped sharpener bit designed to keep them razor sharp.

I have the delta attachment for my DP, but I wound up buying a used benchtop mortiser anyway.  What kind of DP do you have?  Maybe I'll ship you mine if its still in the shop.

I'd be interested in buying also.  Would make a great present for a sister-in-law who loves the commercial.

The Coffee Shop / Re: Advice on a Table Saw Please
« on: September 24, 2013, 10:05:56 am »
I am also extremely pressed for space.  nonetheless I got a deal a few years ago from someone selling a 1970's era unisaw with a 3 horse 220v motor and a 54" table, and it is well worth the footprint it takes.  It is the most used tool in my shop.  Very little goes through that doesn't get sometime on that saw.  I like it so much that I sacrificed my workbench rather than reduce the size of the saw.  I also use it as my assembly table, and set a router table into the extension wing.  A good cabinet saw with a Biesimeyer type fence is worth a lot of sacrifices.  I put the saw, like most of my large tools, on casters so I can move them as needed to get the most out of my space.

Many of us have switched to a mixture of 50% boiled linseed oil and 50% paint thinner (or mineral spirits) instead.  It still brings out the grain, but will better accept a clear finish afterwards.  I think it was Dan Gallo who came up with the mixture.

I'm with Al W.  I usually start with rough cut hardwood, so everything goes through the process and hits most of the tools.  I also have a 16-32 sander and consider it indispensable.  My router table (built into the extension wing of my unisaw) is also a very frequent flier.

I don't understand global warming.  Here in Florida it's simple.  In the fall, winter, and spring it's warm.  In the summer it's hot.  It must be what everybody likes, because they keep coming to visit from all over the Globe!

I bought that set about a year ago.  It's pretty handy to have around.  I always get sets in 1/2 inch shaft if available.  Less chatter etc, as long as your collets will support them.
