The Coffee Shop / Re: I think I'm done
« on: June 10, 2010, 12:42:28 am »
Hey Charlie, I understand. I tell myself about once a week that I'm going to quit running my blog. If you are trying to run your pattern web site as a business and you are losing money then by all logic you should change something or shut it down.

Unfortunately you probably can't really quit. Your stuck. You are a right-brained person. Your decisions are formed by creativity, feeling and intuition. That's why they call it being a starving artist. It's not always logical. What is happening to you right now is your left brain is being a pain in the ass and telling you to stop.

Your right brain will eventually win out and force you to do what gives it a high. No one puts as much time into something as you do with your patterns without getting a buzz from it.

If you are losing money that you need to eat then you have to stop. If it is just that you are frustrated because the time and effort are not returning the monies you think are earned then you are forgetting one big important thing. That thing is something we all need. I'm not sure what the one word for that thing is but but its the feeling we get when we do something we are passionate about. It's the feeling you get when you are doing something you love so much that you forget to eat or go to the bathroom. Time stands still and you are in that zone where nothing else matters. It's sad but most people are so busy letting their left brain run their life that they never experience that feeling. I know you know what I'm talking about. How much is that feeling worth?

I'm not telling you to quit or not. I'm just saying to make sure you understand why you started creating art. Was it really about the money or was it something else?

I have one of the branding irons from Rockler. It was okay when I was building furniture but it seems too big for scroll saw projects. I never got it down very well because if it got too hot the burn would not look good and you had to make sure you pressed straight down.  Rockler also sells a branding iron that mounts into your drill press so you get a perfect straight stamp every time. $350

I have made that same mistake. I thought I had picked up acrylic spray but I actually picked up spray glue. What a mess that made.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Holy cow! Wax!
« on: June 08, 2010, 12:32:14 pm »
The common knowledge is not to use any wax product with silicon in it. The silicon can prevent stain finishes from properly penetrating the wood. While I know there is truth to this I have never had it be a problem with scroll saw projects. I have used car waxes and not had a problem but to be safe just use Johnsons Paste wax. It does not contain silicon. Look for the can below in the floor wax section or cleaning supplies.

I like the idea but I don't think the title is clear enough. Throw out a few supply forum titles for me.

I intentionally left the details up to the cutter. I want these to be as individual as possible. If you want to paint them go for it. Cut them from ply, hardwood or acrylic. Just know that each one is cut in the memory of the officers.

Thanks Ken, we are getting a pretty good response so far. I want to thank all of you guys for helping out. Hopefully Jim will be able to sell them and make a few bucks for the families. Once he gets a few I'll try to help him get them sold.

I have been a technician for Xerox Corp for the last 31 years. It's been a great job but like all jobs has it's moments where you wonder why you are there. I would not change anything if I had it all to do over though. I started pretty young so I still have a few years before I retire. I'm only 52 now. I work on a group of machines we call Production equipment. The down side to that is we have to work 24/7 on a rotating standby schedule. It's not too bad but it does mean some long, late nights.

The picture below is our Igen production color digital press (Long winded way to say color copier) . Wonderful machine to work on but can be challenging for sure. I also service black and white production printers that are used by large companies to print payroll checks and things like that. When the payroll machines won't work people get very excited very fast. We have to respond to a service call in an average of 2 to 4 hours 24/7 which is why the late nights.

General Scroll Saw Talk / Re: Scrollsaw Association of the World
« on: June 03, 2010, 04:57:48 pm »
I was a member of SAW for a year and I'm ashamed to say I did not renew my membership. SAW is an international organization that provides education and organization to people interested in the art of scrolling. When you join you are supporting the advancement of the hobby more than anything else. They put out a newsletter and other publications. They have a yearly EXPO. This year the EXPO is in Ohio. They also have a website with resources for scrollers. They encourage and help members start local chapters.

I guess it depends on what you expect to get from a SAW membership if it would be of value to you.

Vista and IE are probably not the problem. It's most likely that you don't have java installed or it needs to be reinstalled. Here is the link to download java.
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Give that a try and if that does not help email me and I see what else I can do.

I think you could add the url of your facebook as your home page. Will that work for you?

The link below will take you to the lever I purchased. It needs to be modified to shorten the bolt. I did a post on the lever in December of 2009 if I remember correct. It post shows how I made it work. Let me know if you can't find it.
